Hard Stools

First of all, everything is going well post surgery and I just finished a 45 min work out at the all new LA fitness in town.

My only problem I have is my stools are big and rock hard. I have tried everything to soften them up.

Beni-fiber in everything
All sorts of stool softeners, colace, Senna tea etc etc.
Prune juice......yucko but tried it.

My damn stools are hard as rock and really make what use to be an enjoyable act, terrifying.

And yes Leanne I researched the hell out of this to the point of using a glycerin capsule last night which worked but rather not have to use that everytime.

My new system is making coal out of my food and its driving me nuts.

Benefibre made me constipated even though I was drinking 6 litres of fluid per day.  The pharmacist told me that in some people it just goes the other way and hard as a rock would describe what I had.  I took Senokot-S to really get cleaned out and then I started taking probiotics and haven't had a problem since.

I second the probiotics. I use them daily too and no problems anymore. Like Tracey I used a laxative [milk of magnesia] to get things cleared out and then used the probiotics. It's been smooth sailing ever since!

Wow! so happy so many responded and pro-biotics is doing the trick.  Sure wish the nurse would tell us these things.  Is there any certain brand that is good?  I have had this struggle for 4 months and tried all the things which don;t work great and it is awful.
Off to get pro-biotics!!
Thanks

I wish I could offer a positive solution-3 months or so out nothing has helped so far-other than a laxative every couple of days.

I take colace 1 tab twice a day
I have tried lax a day-no luck
I have tried probiotics for  a month-no benefits

So back to colace and lax routine for now.  I am always reading and looking for other options.

If you stools are hard and large then increase your colace would be my suggestion-perhaps take 2 capsules twice a day?

Good luck!

the nutritionist said to take milk of Magnesia right away to keep your stool soft and I found it in a chewable form at shoppers so I basically take one each time I take my vitamins and it seems to be keeping me comfortable.   Those lumps of coal are extremely painful as I experienced if I didn't take the MOM regularly.

Good luck!!
