carb counting "net" or total?
I count total carbs and aim for 30 gr/day but I keep an eye to net carbs if I go a bit higher. I'm not a stickler if I went to 40 or a bit over if it's from veggies or increased fibre. I was reading in one of Lyle Macdonald's books that even though fibre is not absorbed the same way non-fibrous carbs are, you body still does absorb some even if it's just a little less. So with that in mind, I do look to total carbs.
I've been careful with my food tracking, but I just added fibre as an item to track in Sparkpeople so I can keep a better eye on that now.
I'll be keeping a better eye on the carbs now.
Pat is correct Only absorbed carbs count, so you don't count fibre or sugar alcohols
your body passes them , the are not absorbed so should not be counted towards your total.
I know Weigh****chers at one point tried a carb counting thing, then had to amend it to say "it doesn't matter how much fiber per serving, you can only deduct 4 grams of fiber" because fatties, of course, were eating tons of high fiber high sugar foods thinking they netted out to no carbs.
So I would say be careful of the "net" concept.
Intellectually of course, this is impossible.

True, everything in reason. At least the fibre increase will cut down on how much metamucil, milk of mag or colace I need to take. lol
