When I am off work for surgery I'll get short term disability insurance. Does anyone know how I start the process? Bring the paperwork to the hospital with me? Do I take it to the doctor's office? I can't really afford to mess this up and not get paid. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I think you should direct your question to someone in your workplace.  Ask them what they need.

Phone your surgeons office and ask them how they normally handle it for their patients.

Sometimes the best support  you can get isn't all purple puddles and pink rainbows.

That might help if they weren't useless. I asked today and they just stared at me dumbfounded. I'll call the Dr's office

I went through the Weight Management Clinic in Ottawa and about a week before surgery they sent me a letter that said that I would need time off etc.

it varies from employer to employer... I had to contact an HR rep who contacted me for "triage" then it was passed onto a 3rd party company (morneau shepell) who told me what to do and how to do it. I would contact someone at work to find out your process.

I've been wondering about this myself.  I'll have to give a call to my insurance tomorrow.  Not sure I even have short-term disability.

Usually you get a form from work. If not as you leave the hospital they should give you a letter stating how long you have to be off work. This should be faxed to your HR. Every company is different you need to start a conversation with your human resources.

I have the paperwork, just not sure who to give it to, I'll call the surgeon's office to see how he operates (pardon the pun) lol
