In short, NO, not everyone has to have it done....I did not.

they are required for several different reasons, however the main reason being to see if and/or how severe sleep apnea you may have.

It is vital to know this for your anesthesiologist to know the correct formula and dosage to give you.

I wish I didn't; I didn't care for that experience one bit. However, the study revealed severe sleep apnea, so it is good that I had it done. I have a CPAP machine now... I feel like a freak using it, but it certainly allows me to have a better sleep.

what sparkyboi said and they are looking for comorbidities with obesity to work their stats up afterwards and if you're close to the cut off for BMI they may allow the surgery if you have comorbidities.

My brother had suffered from sleep apnea for years and he swore by the CPAP machine. I went 17 years undiagnosed. Because I was afraid. Finally it got to the point I was so sleep deprived and I would sleep almost all the time but it was not doing me any good. I was always tired and eventually it stared effecting my job and home life. My brother begged me to be tested. So I talked to my doctor... so happy I did. I have severe sleep apnea. I stopped breathing 68 times an hour!!! That more than once a minute. Now... my CPAP machine and I are best friends. My husband is impressed how quiet it is and is happy to have his wife back. I dont care what I look like with it on... hell Im sleeping and so is my husband. It saved my life.

they sleep study is to check sleep apnea and O2 saturation levels, basically if you have severe sleep apnea and they don't know when u are put under your O2 will drop to low and you run the risk of organ damage or even death

I look forward to having my sleep apnea improve. I had a cardiac arrest brought on by sleep apnea. Now, even though I use a cpap machine I know my husband still worries.

Another great reason to have wls!!

I also wasn't required to have a sleep study test. Your team will review your questionaire and medical history to determine if you meet the criteria for a sleep study.
