One year out!
Yesterday marked exactly one year since my RNY surgery at St Joe's Toronto. 365 days later and I LOVE MY RNY!
I have lost 133 lbs in that time. My weight loss has slowed, and I'm not quite to goal, but I keep chugging along. On June 25, 2012 I weighed over 300 lbs, and miserable, ashamed and uncomfortable I walked into the operating theatre to start this take a big step on this journey. The staff at the hospital were wonderful and I am so grateful to them and Dr Smith for this gift.
I started out a size 26 and am now a 12/14, wearing a size M or L top (I'm just a smidge under 5'8"). This year I started running and did a 5K back in May, my best NSV to date. I now workout 4-5 days a week. I am planning to do a 10k this fall. I absolutely love running.
I will say that the honeymoon is over. Old thinking patterns have set back in and every day I have to make decisions. I am a dumper, anything high in sugar or fat will make me fill ill (bread generally does too). I'm glad I am because it does help to stay away from junky stuff. I'm not perfect, but every day I try. I have realized that there will never be a point where I don't want to eat the Big Mac, don't want the french fries, don't want the bread. This will be a lifelong journey and I guess I'll always be in "recovery."
I did learn this year that while I am an emotional and compulsive overeater, I also had a lot of bad habits that weren't necessarily emotion (i.e. eating poorly on the run, having bad foods in the fridge to snack on, etc) so I have devised some strategies to really help with this. I always have healthy snacks to grab quickly, always have a water bottle/protein bar on me, and I make big batches of a dish on weekends that I can reheat for dinner through the week so I always have a proper meal to eat quickly on weeknights.
To have a normal BMI, I must get down to 160 lbs so that is still my goal. I would like to get there before I go to Disney World in November so that is what I am really focused on now.
If you are pre-op: hang in there, read a lot and ask questions when you need to. This place is great for support. I have loved having this community and never would have survived Opti and my early days pre-op without it.
You look fabulous!!!! Congratulations.. keep plugging away and you will get to goal!
You really are an inspiration, thank you for sharing your journey. You look amazing and happy. I hope I can be as successful as you in a years time
Congratulations!
