Does Heartburn really go away after surgery?
I've been taking Prevacid for years, I've been told that this heartburn will probably be gone after the RNY surgery. Can anyone comment on this please.
Thanks, Cathy

I just posted this on another topic about prevacid. My gf was on HB meds for 10 plus years. At her 6 month appt nurse told her she didn't need to continue to take meds for heartburn and she immediately got an ulcer...ended up in hospital for 3 days! It was more for preventative then for the HB since surgery though-I wouldn't risk quiting it and getting an ucler-they are pretty brutal I hear!
Thanks Monica, I've heard different view points on this due to larger stomach area acids no longer come in contact with the smaller stomach and aesophagus. I guess it's just different for everyone, so time will tell and maybe even better with getting some of weight down. I'm hoping it will improve because I'd love to stop taking Prevacid eventually.
I'm sorry your friend got an ulcer, that would be so painful I'm sure.
Thanks,
Cathy

I had severe GERD prior to surgery - ( one of the big reasons I did not have the VSG).....and I didnt look - so I am assuming you are having RNY.....
I took an acid reducer for 6 weeks post surgery.....and have been great since...
When I say I had severe GERd.....I was considering surgery because it was uncontrolable.....RNY was a gift to me not just for weight loss....but for the resolution of my issues with acid reflux
THIS. I have said MANY times in the last year that even if I didn't lose a single pound, getting rid of the acid reflux would be worth it.
I'm very hopeful that I have a similar experience.

Gwynn, this is a bit off topic, but could you please tell me how to put my Orientation, Dates and surgery info underneath my posts like yours? Please?
Thanks, Cathy

Sure! :)
Go to "My Account" on the upper right hand side of your screen - go to Settings. In there, click on Message Board. You'll see a white box that says "Signature" - you can put whatever you like in there. :)

Yes I'm having the RNY. I am feeling exactly the same way with my GERD. Lets hope I have these same results as you also, it would be life changing for sure.
Thanks again. I really appreciate all the suggestions.
