So I am pre-op just in the stage of orientation and i had a blot clot after having a c-section with my son 6 months ago....Now i went to my specialist yesterday and he said that i can stop taking my medications and that im all back to good health no more blood clot in my leg....now i am worried as if i continue on this journey and go through with this weight loss surgery what are the chances that i will get a blood clot again its a very scary thing and I'm not sure if I could go through that again...anyone have this experience or know anything about this please let me know thanks....

I'm pretty sure they give you blood thinners after surgery that you have to inject for a certain length of time like 1 or 2 weeks, to prevent blood clots. Also, they make sure you are up and walking around fairly soon after surgery also to help avoid blood clots. Just let your surgeon know and keep mentioning it to people along the way. they will take all the precautions and watch for it.

Hi, they start you on blood thinners right after surgery. And you you continue to give them to yourself for 8 days after you get out of the hospital. I had no issues what so ever. Take care  Krista..

Your concern is real. Not sure which part of this process you are at but it is very important that when you see the internist you tell him/her about your previous DVT.

Obesity puts us at higher risk post op, that's why it' so important to get moving, and I don't know about other centres but Humber gives heparin while in hospital then we take another injection at home daily for a couple of weeks

damn ipad, for some reason I have trouble typing on it.

Anyway, your risk factor increases having had a DVT already but really, until you speak to the internist about this there's no need to fret. You will be presented with the potential of increased risk, what can be done to prevent this then go from there

Cheers

I was diagnosed with lung clots while going through the wls process. I had to wait for them to clear up before I could have my surgery. My plan included 14 days of injections that I gave myself after I left the hospital. They also gave me blood thinners while I was in the hospital.

I have not had a blood clot before but I am older going into surgery.  The internist at the Guelph clinic has ordered that  be given coumadin  2 hours before my surgery to prevent blood clots.  They will probably do that for you too.

Hi Yoyo4life,

Blood clots are NO fun that's for sure!!  Glad to hear you're in the clear now.  Just make sure you disclose this information to the doctors/bariatric team.  I had a blood clot lodge in my lung a couple of weeks after a car accident (happened years ago) and when I mentioned this to the doctors, they put me on blood thinners for 30 days after my RnY surgery as a precaution - this was for the month of July and I (knock on wood) have had no clots nor any problems since.  Keeping well hydrated as well as every bit of exercise helps too!

Everyone is unique just as their health history is unique and they will treat you accordingly so I wouldnt be worried as long as they're informed about everything regarding your health history.

They do ask if you have had any previous problems with clotting...they did at my clinic.  I have a blood clotting disorder which puts me at high risk for a clot so they are giving me heparin injection before surgery and 4 weeks of a blood thinner afterwards.  I will be getting the blood thinner lovenox.....2 needles/day for 28 days..not my idea of fun...especially when I have to self administer them...ouch!!!  I am sure they will take care with you because of your history.  Try not to worry.... it will all be ok.
