Any other young patients? HELP
This December will be the 2 year mark of sending away my rec from my family Doctor. Just wondering if there are any other young patients (I am 21) trying to go through with Gastric bypass. I am going through Guelph and I feel like they are not taking me seriously and constantly pushing my appointments back. I have been waiting 3 months just to get the call for the post op diet class. HELP.
I'm 25 and going through Ottawa. While I consider myself to be quite mature, I do feel like I am young to be undergoing an elective surgery that will dictate parts of the rest of my life. However, I know that 'the rest of my life' would not be the quality or length that I hope for if I was not having this surgery. It's a difficult choice to make in your 20's but you know your body and your struggles to maintain a healthy self more than anyone else.
I would suggest asking the staff if your age is a factor in your appointments being pushed back and sharing that you are well-researched, have a great support system and have already spent X amount of time mentally preparing yourself.
So long as YOU feel you are mature enough to handle such a drastic life long commitment and you fit the bariatric criterion, I don't see why there would be an issue.
I just resently got my call for the post-op food class it took 5 months to get that call... hang in there.

I'm through Guelph and yes the wait is long but I feel certain that they are taking you seriously. I started the process Aug. of 2012 and had my orientation in Jan. 2013 each appointment has been 2 to 3 months wait in between. I had my post op Aug. 26 and Audrey said that there were 260 people behind us waiting for the post op class. She said that they would have a bit of a wait for their post op class. I was called this week with the date for my surgeons appointment it is Nov 5, Try and be patient they will get to you. I will be 62 Dec. 14, and I wish I was 21. You are fortunate that you are so young. Take the time to research and plan what the new you will be like. Polish up on your cooking skills find some bariatric recipes that you may like. Search the fashion magazines and check out what the new you will be wearing. They will call you when it is your turn they are back logged right now. Your almost there. Good luck.
