Wait time after your referal?

Hello,

I was just wondering how long it took for everyone in Ontario after they have had there confirmation of there referral?  I have confirmation from my family doctor that my referral was accepted and that I have been referred to the Humber River hospital.

How long after the referral did you have your information session/assessments/then surgery?

Any input would be helpful.

it depends on which hospital your referral was sent to

It's usually a couple of weeks from your referral to the orientation session. You should call them after about a week if you don't hear anything. Surgeon appt seems to be a couple of weeks or so after that,

Hi Greg, here is my timeline:

1. Nov 30 2012 - family doctor faxed in my referral (did not know at the time where is was going but I live in Brampton)

2. Mid Dec 2012 - got letter in mail informing me of Info Session at Toronto Western Hospital (TWH)]

3. Jan 9 2013 - Info Session at TWH     4. June 10 2013 - Saw Social Worker at TWH  

5. June 24 2013 - Saw Nurse Practitioner at TWH    6. July 15 2013 - Had Nutrition Class at TWH

7. Sept 13 2013 - Saw Dietician at TWH    8. Sept 24 2013 - Saw a Psychologist at TWH

9. Oct 11 2013 - Meet the Surgeon, buy Optifast, got surgery date

10. Nov 15 2013 - RNY Surgery at TWH - so almost a full year to the date from referral to surgery

sent referral. Was  told to wait 2 weeks before calling. Called on the dot and got into info session the week after. That was just 2 days ago and they said it should take 2-4 weeks to process my paperwork and for appointments to be scheduled. I am planning to call in 2 weeks. Also, Humber

Thank you for the information.  I will call the center on Monday as it has been about two weeks since I got the confirmation call.

I was about 7 months from referral to surgery. HRRH seems to get people through faster since they are high volume.

If it is Humber you should not have to wait too long. I would wait 2-3 from referral and then give them a call for an orientation date. Good Luck on you Journey. 

Definately call.  I had multiple issues getting through the process that it has taken me a year and a half to get to my surgery date.  My doctor initially referred me directly to a surgeon in Toronto.  That was a 4 month wait.  The surgeon's office didn't correct the error until I went in for the appointment and then they referred me through the registry.  I then waited another 3 months for that appointment.  Once I got into the Program at Humber it moved faster.  One recommendation that I learned on this web site is that if you can take the time off, take your dietician, social worker, and nursing appointments separately.  They seem to be able to get you in earlier that way.  Good luck with the process
