Follow-ups

Hi all,

I was just wondering if I need to make an appointment at the hospital at all for a follow up. My family doctor is keeping track on my blood work. I only got a call from the nurse day after surgery, which I never returned since I was still out of it. Then I called couple of times in the first couple of weeks to understand the pain I was having. I had my surgery 8 months ago. Am I missing something ?

I'm not sure what hospital you went through, but I had surgery 3 weeks ago and have appointments for the 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, and 1 year follow ups booked with Toronto Western.

I would contact your bariatric clinic and see if you are missing something.

Good luck.

Tracy.

Where did you have your surgery??  I had surgery 7 months ago at HRRH and have had a 1, 3 & 6 month follow up with my centre.  The blood work done there is different from what your doctor can get done.  Unless you had surgery out of the country then you only have your doctor for follow up I would say call your centre.  You should have also had at least 1 appointment with your surgeon, I have seen mine twice since surgery.

Why would you wait until your almost a year post op. They would have covered all this at your orientation. You need to call them and get an appt. Your doctor may be following blood work but it may not be all that the center sends us for.  HRRH takes 11 vials for post op blood work..is this what your doctor orders as well?

Sorry if I sound rude....I just don't understand why you would wait so long.

My doctor orders everything. I am asking what exactly happens at follow-ups. So far, all I heard is blood work.

I'm not sure at Western but through Humber we see the nurse and dietician. In addition to the blood work. They weigh and then measure our waists, go over how we are doing, our diets etc. Any concerns we have. You should have also seen your surgeon as well. They want to make sure we are doing well and are well on our ways to becoming healthier versions of our old selves.

This program is a 5 year commitment.

I wish you well...

I'm also through TWH and we don't generally see the surgeon again. unless it's for more surgery

But check all the paperwork they gave you when they released you from the hospital there should be a page in there with all your upcoming appointments. I'm betting you missed a few appointments.   I know for me it was a 3 month Dietician group session appointment then met with the nurse.

At 6 month with nurse and dietician and

At 1 year with nurse, dietician and psychologist

and at the end of April I'm in a 18 month group session.
