Who had to have a vsg instead of rny

So I have been fast tracked for surgery and only have to do just over 2 weeks of optifast. Initially I had asked to do 4 weeks as I wanted to lose as much weight as possible. But since my BMI is just under 50 they said I should be fine with less than 3 weeks of optifast. I'm nervous that they are going to have to do a vertical sleeve instead of bypass. I was wondering who had a vsg instead of a rny when they had plans for rny and why did they have to change to vsg.

Thanks

Unless there are complications and you and your surgeon have agreed to the RNY there should be no reason to get the sleeve. Same goes for those looking for a sleeve and worried about RNY.

I was just worried that my liver won't shrink enough with less time on the shakes in order to perform the rny.

I get it. I used to be so worried about my liver. I even had a nightmare that I woke up from surgery and instead of performing RNY, they removed my liver because it was so bad.

My BMI when I started Opti was 56. I got my surgery on short notice due to a cancellation so only did 2 weeks of Opti. Trust me, I understand. I was worried too.

When I saw my surgeon right before surgery, and he said to me "so last chance, which surgery are we doing?", we had a talk about which one was best for me... and I asked him straight out if there was any chance he could get in there and have to do the sleeve instead. He said it was a slim chance; but usually the only reason that happens is if someone's intestines are reversed. It's a rare condition they encounter sometimes.

I ended up with RNY. My surgery was complication-free, as has been my recovery.

My biggest recommendation: stick to Opti 100%. Get and stay in ketosis. It's short term. You can do it!! I didn't "cheat" once. It's two weeks. You got this!

Total waste of money when you're on Opti or following whatever program they give you! I've never done a keto diet before, but I could totally tell once my body went into keto. Hunger cues changes; and I was stuffed from a cup of broth.

Just do what the hospital tells you and save your $$. :)

Thanks so much! Thats the reassurance I needed. Im not going to cheat at all, haven't even had the jello or broth you are allowed and haven't even had a stick of gum. I love the shakes.

I have the same worry because I heard if you have a lot of scar tissue they might not do Rny. I had a hysterectomy a number of years ago and have the incision scar across the bottom of my abdomin side to side.

I had my appt with the Internist on Monday and was told that VSG may be my only route. I have had 4 abdominal surgeries and if scar tissue is present and plentiful the surgeon may have no choice but to do a VSG. I won't know until I am out of surgery which procedure I get.

I had two c-sections with my kids and I have two long scars as well. I had RNY no problem. The doctor told me the scars were too far down my abdomen to be a problem. Hope this helps.
