Protein Shakes

Some straight talk about protein shakes, please! I know that once people have wls, they typically have to take in protein shakes. I was wondering how often you have them? I've seen lots of different kinds out there. Which are your favourites? How long does a container last? Anything you can share about them is appreciated. I have seen very vague info on them. Stef

Hi Stefani! I have tried hundreds of dollars worth of protein shakes from the US and from here. Most are horrible! But, I finally found one that is quite tolerable and is loaded with protein. It's called ISO XP from GNC. It is $39.99 for members and $49.99 for non-members (membership is only $10, so buy one container and your membership for the year is paid for). It has a whopping 45 grams of protein per scoop which I add to 12 ounces of skim milk giving me a total protein intake of at least 55 grams. Seeing that my protein goal is only 62 grams, I really don't have to worry about my protein for the rest of the day. I think I figured it out that the container should last a little less that two months if you use one scoop per day. It comes in 3 or 4 flavours but I really like the orange creamsicle. Hope this helps, Mary Lou 278/225

At what part of the diet do you start the protein shakes? My biggest concern is that for 2 weeks after surgery there's no protein in my diet. Deb

I'm looking for more practical information than just flavours - the old how often, when people started to take them, etc. Stef

To answer your "how often" question, it really depends on how much protein your surgeon suggest you take in a day and how much protein is in the suppliment that you use. If your surgeon suggests 70 g of protein a day and your suppliment has 35, then it's suggested that you drink two suppliments a day. Whatever other protein you get is bonus! I drink a pre-made protein drink called Weider Pure Pro Shake and it has 35g of protein in each can. I drink one of those a day and then get the rest of my daily recommended protein from a protein bar and from my regular meals. I have tried just about all the powdered protein drinks out there and couldn't stand them on a daily basis, so that's why I drink the (expensive) pre-made drinks. It costs a whole lot more, but it's worth the amount of protein I get per can and it's worth it just to be able to get the whole thing down without gagging. Everyone has different tastes and then everyone has different tastes right after surgery, so it's kind of a search and experiment process when trying to find the right protein suppliment for you. Good luck! Cheers! Lorraine

Hi Stef: We seem to need more information on Protein. Everyone has such different tastes that it is hard to tell someone which one to take. I like Champion Pure Whey Stack Chocolate. I think it is yummy. It has 71 servings in the size can I buy and I love it. I get mine at SNDCanada.com or at the SND store. There is so much information to learn about the protein drinks and our new bodies since weight loss that I used to spend lots of time in the OSSG protein channel. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG-Protein/?yguid=185942754 You can find out lots of information from many fellow WLS people. Hope this information is helpful to you. Melanie

I buy Cytosport Vanilla Bean from SND Canada. I mix two scoops (36 grams) into 8 oz of 1% milk. I also use the Weider Pure Pro shakes, which are 35 grams of protein. I buy these at Shoppers Drug Mart, for my office. The Weider Pure Pro are ready to drink, in 355 ml cans. Great convenience, but alittle pricey for everyday use. ($3.49 / can) I try to supplement with 70grams of protein per day. To keep variety in my routines, I add protein powder to instant Jello Pudding (S/F) and I will pour protein drink over my Kashi GO lean Crunch cereal or oatmeal sometimes for breakfast. Karen G

Hi Karen, I just found the Weider Pure Pro shakes at my Pharma Plus yesterday, and bought a pack of 4/$12.99 (chocolate). I found the taste horrible! the aftertaste is nauseating...don't know if it's the protein taste or some kind of artificial sweetener taste, but I couldn't fini**** Is the vanilla flavour any better? Just picked up my order from snd.ca for the orange creamsicle flavour whey powder (45 g) and will try it today..............I'm having a lot of trouble finding something I don't have to choke down and mostly try to get my protein in with food, but it's not enough. You must not mind the aftertaste??? Christine C

I find the chocolate Weider Pure Pro to be the best taste. You need to put the can in the freezer for about 10 minutes before you drink it. Really cold, it tastes like a fudgeccycle. (spelling, ooops) I use the Cytosport Vanilla Bean from SND, which has a good vanilla taste and very little "protein" after-taste. I've had the vanilla from Weider, but it is not as good as my Cytosport Vanilla Bean, so I didn't enjoy it as much. I found my taste buds were constantly changing in the early stages. What tasted good then, no longer tastes good. I was mostly using "fruity" flavoured protein drinks in the early stages. I acquired the taste for chocolate and vanilla much later. The vanilla is good on cereal and oatmeal, too. In the early stages, I was addicted to shrimp and got most of my protein from food sources. I could eat 6-8 medium shrimp at one month out. Hope you are doing well. Karen G
