Happy people are likeable

Personal Relations

Who are the people we really like, and like to be with? Most of the time, they are happy people, people who like themselves and others.

Being happy is almost the entire secret of being likeable. Though no person can expect to be liked by everybody, the likeable people have the inside track most of the time.

How do we become happy and thus likeable? We're continuously told that happiness cannot be found in property, power, and prestige. It is rooted instead in self-acceptance, in feeling loved and wanted, and in giving genuine service, maybe just in the form of very useful work.

Twelve Step programs are structured to make us happy if we persevere long enough in working the individual steps. While it may seem contradictory, even people with heavy burdens and personal sorrows can find underlying happiness in the program. A great deal of this also hinges on our belief in a Higher Power and a confidence that we have a place in the universal system.

I can be happy today in spite of things that others would consider burdensome and depressing. Happiness really comes from God, and it also serves to attract friends into my life.

My Mantra is that I do not determine my success by the number hanging in my closet, nor will I let the scale determine that success either. . .  It is through trial and error I will continue to grow and succeed. . .  Laureen

Hugs Laureen!

Happy people are indeed much more fun to be around. We can choose to be happy and fulfilled. I think as we get older or "wants/needs" are much less. In my case less is more. Things just bog you down. Things are replaceable but you know as we get older we "downsize".  Cleaning out the clutter and getting rid of things. We can't take our "things" with us when we die. I enjoy getting older. I may not get wiser but hey I'm still learning and chugging along!
People that volunteer and serve others....they are happy people.
The power of positive thinking...it does help! Thanks again Laureen for your postings. I look forward to them during the week and apply them to my Mindful Eating. Debbie

Hi, Laureen.

As always, a great post.  I enjoy reading them every day, even if I don't reply.  And Debbiejean, you are so right on.

End of the day here already, and I was not going to check the site, but I am so glad I did.  Got my dose of shared recovery, always a good medicine to have, especially just before the weekend [no computer at home].

Everyone have a good weekend, eating mindfully and experiencing the serenity that comes as we work our programs.  For me, it is a great relief each day to eat to live, and no longer be living to eat.

Peace, all,
