Question about Folic Acid

I had my surgery in January of 2007, and am finally pregnant with our first.

My doctor told me to overload on Folic Acid, but didn't give me a mg ballpark figure.  Does anyone know exactly how much extra I should be taking?

I'm on a prescription Prenatal, iron, but my extra folic acid is over the counter.

i take 4mg a day.  that is 4 pills it does not matter since it leaves your body fast.  You can't overdose on it.

The most I've been able to find in stores is 800mcg tabs.  My OB wanted me on at least 4mg.  So i found  a 5mg capsule online that i take daily.  My folic is on the high side now, but considering I'm 41, my OB is totally fine with that.  From her perspective, there is really no such thing as "too much folic" during pregnancy.  If you had RNY or DS then we're not absorbing all of what we take in anyway.  So load up, momma!
