I have been overweight my whole life.  I have been unable to lose any substantial weight especially after I've had my two children.  I just keep gaining, even when I'm dieting.

My question is, I'm obviously not on the heavier end of obesity, but I feel like If I keep going this way, I most certainly will be.  I want to do something before I get there.  I already are having joint pain, major GERD issues, problems with sleeping, high blood pressure.

Am I crazy to do this?

Just had my RNY on 7.2.12!!!!  WOOHOO!!!!!

Nope you're not crazy. I was 232 the day of surgery (after my pre op weight loss) and was considered a lightweight. I'm 5'1" so we're pretty close in height. I lost to goal by 11 months out and have stayed there ever since. I couldn't imagine staying at the weight I was - couldn't lose it before surgery either - at least not permanently. I had GERD so severely my doc recommeded RNY to relieve that - the weight loss was secondary. I'm glad I did it every single day. No more GERD, joint issues or anything. I highly recommend this -lightweights too have their own issues. We can and do well with this surgery and can maintain once we hit goal. Good luck to you. Keep us posted.

My BMI was less than yours - must make me super crazy .

This is a lifelong commitment and you absolutely must do it from a place of being informed and educated.

Read, read, read on here - make sure you completely understand what you are going for and be convinced that you are doing the right thing.   This is absolutely not something to be taken lightly as it will affect you for the rest of your life.  After a while it will not be the biggest thing in your life, nor should it define you, but there are aspects that will affect you differently because you had the surgery.

You need to be committed to changing your lifestyle completely - your diet, commitment to exercise and vitamins etc ...

Thanx for the quick responses ladies!!  And thank you so much for the lightweight forum, I had no clue it existed :)

I have researched all of this to death.  I orginally was going to do the lap band, mostly due to being a lightweight, but after research I just can't do it.

You've all made me feel MUCH better :)

when i was 25 i weighted 227 and i m 5'4 at the time i wanted to have the surgery so bad but i was to afraid... so i waited and waited and waited and a child and 50 pounds later i was to scared of not doing(i was also afraid od having the surgery) not only did i have PCOS (since i was 19)i also added joint pain, diabetes GERD.mild arthritis. i missed out in lots of things.. i would not leave the house and avpid birthday parties that my two boys were invited to.. why? because i felt i was ugly and far and even though my kids and hubby loved me i felt miserable.. now that im down 40lbs(im currently 237) i wished i had done it sooner.. yesterday i dolled up just because and the reaction i got from other people was amazing not only did men look at me twice they held doors opern for me and even one offer to let me go first before him to pump gas...I HAD NEVER HAD THIS HAPPEN BEFORE it gave me a new boost im my self steem...

what im trying to say is that i wished i had taken the step sooner so i would not have kept on ganing and  geting sicker..

at the end the desicion is your you have to think very carefully about it and do what you feel is best.. your the only one that can asnwer your question.. all of us just give opinions

good luck in your journey

I have always been on a diet and my adult weight fluxuated from 139 to 250.  I was a lightweight, too and weighed 236 the morning of surgery.  I am just about at my goal.  I always thought that this surgery was for those people who tipped the scales at 300.  When my pcp recommended that I consider it, I was really taken aback.  I also had the joint pain, High blood pressure treated unsuccessfully with 4 meds, prediabetes on the verge of needing insulin, gout on 3 meds, and the list goes on.   I had PCOD, hypothryroidism and was told I had every disease associated with  Metabolic Syndrome.   I was told I would not see age 60 if I did not get my weight off.

No you are not crazy to do this.  Do your research on all the options.  Speak with your doctors - you will need their support.  If you need the 6 months supervised diet with monthly vists with your doctor per your insurance company, start  them now so you will be ahead of the game if and when you decide to move forward..

Do it for yourself.
