Surgery Cost

Just received my billing statement for my surgery. Thank goodness for my insurance.

For all the pre op's that are interested and for those just making comparisons for a 2 day stay at Atlanta Medical Center including surgery, meds, surgeons, etc.... the grand total came out to be $77,214.42!

This surgery is a blessing but it surely is not for the uninsured and poor. Whew, it was cheaper to have a baby.

Wow. I had mine done at Barnes Jewish hospital, a bariatric center of excellence, and my insurance was only billed $28,000.

I wonder why such a disparity in price?

There is a HUGE difference between what the hospital bills and what the insurance pays. Mine billed at $58K but got paid $28K. My portion was $2K. The typical payout for most RNY surgery is $25-30K from what I have seen - but, that is for lap, not open, and not including other procedures simultaniously or complications.

Ah no, that's not what I mean.

My insurance was billed a total of $28K for my entire procedure.  They paid out $8K.  My portion was $0.

Interesting...that seems awfully low compared to what the rest of us has posted. Maybe your insurance doesn't have to play the game...

Man.. My hospital billed my insurance 152k for my surgery and 2 day hospital stay. Of course the insurance said only 30k of it was reasonable and then I was left with 2,600 out of pocket. I had mine done at Good Samaritan Hospital (A bariatric center of excellence) in San Jose, CA

Mine was about 60 grand...thirty for the rny and thirty for the large paraesophageal hernia they found.

My insurance covered all of it because I had it done at the hospital I work for.

Mine was like 52,000 with a 3 day stay.  Insurance most of it.  I paid my 1,0000 deductible and probably 600 or 700 out of pocket.
