What is the 4 in. drop rule?

In men's tailored clothing, the Four Inch Drop Rule is (granted, this is for traditionally cut suits):

Generally, there is a four-inch difference between the size of the coat (chest measurement) and the waist size of the trousers (waist measurement). For some manufacturers, that drop (or difference) can be six to eight inches for an athletic cut suit.

In college, I worked in a men's clothing store...and after, for a while, I worked at Brooks Brothers...
Weight at Heaviest: 320 lbs.
Weight at Surgery:
283.6 lbs.

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...
