no shakes

I just spoke with my nut and she said I didn't need to go on a pre op liquid diet and after surgery, I could go straight to fluids for 14 days, eg soups, and after that soft foods.

I asked if I didn't have to buy protein drinks or powder and she said no, I want you to go on solids ASAP and get your protein from food.

Isn't this unsual?

 Not unheard of.

The postop protcol can be like night and ay between doctors.  Some don't want people relying on shakes because well they eventually just flow right through you and won't satisfy hunger.  Also shakes and bars are supplements, meant to bring ADDITIONAL protein to your diet.  Some people use them as "Healthy" treats.

follow your surgeons protocol and you will be fine.

There are lots of us that have been very successful with this regime.   We just don't post about how difficult it is getting our protein shakes down LOL!!!!

i came home from the hospital on purees, was on that for 2 weeks and then regular foods...i never really did do any protein drinks, only if i could not get it from food....but by the time i had a glass of milk, a greek yogurt and a slice of cheese, i was half way to protein goal..so i only had a couple of protein drinks in the very start..i never did like them so i was fine, i will eat then..every drs plan is different.
good luck

I am a few weeks post op and for me, I would struggle to meet my protein goal without a shake or two; I can only eat about 2 ounces at a time of my pureed foods and that doesn't add up to enough protein by the end of the day. That being said, you might want to have one protein powder on hand.

I had protein shakes the first week and a half after surgery then stopped. I found I could get in all my protein with "real" food and hated the darn shakes anyway. I will on occasion get a new one to try if I know I'll be super busy and likely to forget to eat. It is doable, just takes some planning especially in the beginning when you can't eat much at each meal.

I am 20 months out and I still have 3-4 protein drinks a day, plus 4 meals.  I get 140-160g of protein a day and that keeps my levels up.  I could get my 60g of protein in meals but that wouldn't be enough for me to have a good level of protein.  I know some groups really want you to do it with food but there is no way I could eat enough.  I am eating protein first anyway and still require the shakes.  My group is fine with what I am doing.  I have never stalled and lost 100
% of my excess weight, now a normal BMI.

It's a little unusual but I've heard others say that.

I'm wondering, though, if she wants you on fluids for 14 days, then how will you get your protein for those 14 days?  It would be very hard to get 60 grams of protein or more from soup.  What kind of soup do you plan to get that will give you enough protein?

No protein shakes for me because I think they are completely disgusting.  I didn't get my 60g of protein in until week 3 when I started eating eggs, hard cheese, and canned chicken.  Once the chicken kicked in, the protein went up.  On average, I get 60-70g protein a day and about70oz water.

Now that I have so much going on at work and traveling so much, I still do not always get in my 60g.  Today I had a small Granny Smith apple, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, a cheese stick, 4 baby carrots, and about 1/2 oz of chicken and I am sickly stuffed.  Only about 30oz of fluid. Today was just not a good eating or drinking day for me; I call it a small pouch day.  But I will try again tomorrow to get what I need.

Thanks for all your responses..  She said the first couple of weeks I would not be getting the full recommended amounts of protein, but after 3 weeks off soft foods, I should be able to.

She mentioned that if I hadn't already lost some of the weight, they would recommend pre-op liquid diet or if the liver is enlarged.

I will follow what they say and cross the bridges as I go.  I appreciate your opinions and questions, so next time I speak with them, I can ask further questions.

Thanks
