Carbs question

My NUT gave me a plan that details what I should be getting in protein grams, calories,
fat grams and sugar grams.  However, there is no mention of carbs.  If I pay attention to
all of the above, do I need to (or should I be) tracking carbs too?  If so, how much is
considered normal intake?

Thank You!

my plan does not tell me to count carbs. I avoid breads, pastas, etc (although they are allowed in moderation, i choose to avoid them if possible). i am not limited. I get over 100 a day, and around 30-50 grams of fiber recently. it's all fruits and veggies, some yogurt.

I've never counted carbs, just limited the starchy stuff like bread and pasta.

 As much as I hate math, when you have what your min/max for protein & fat are supposed to be, whatever is left over is carb intake. So if you are given a limit of 1000cal/day, do the math:
  • Protein contains 4 calories per gram
  • Carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram
  • Fat contains 9 calories per gram

I was just getting ready to post this same question. I talked to my Surgeons PA on Monday and she answered my question of "Will I be meeting with a NUT?: and her answer was no. She told me I could eat anything but to avoid High Fatty foods, fried foods and Sugar. I just didn't want to make a mistake about carbs. I have no idea what my carb intake should be limited to.

There is no nutritionist with your surgeon's program?  You can certainly consult with a registered dietician any time you like, and I would suggest doing so.

Thanks Kelly, I'll check with my PCP to see what she says. If I need a referral or not.
That is nice to know.

As far out as I am, if I eat my protein requirements, I cannot get in a lot of white or processed carbs in my day.   I supposed if I had shakes or bars as snacks and got my protein in that way, I would have to eat less protein at meals and could eat more carbs ...

A typical dinner for me would be protein plus two vegetables - lunch would be meat roll ups with cucumber or tomatoes.   Occasionally I will have a grain bread sandwich or a baked sweet potato but I'd say this is a twice or three times a week thing.

Whenever I have counted my carbs it has been around 100gms per day - total, not net.
Again, this is my diet choice and may not work for everyone

I'm with you and get all of my protein from food and milk.  I can't stand even the smell of
shakes, anymore.  So, I've worked hard to get it through food.  I am probably being too anal.

My plan is based on 1000 cal per day although I NEVER quite eat that much.  I'm allowed servings of:

Protein = 8
Dairy = 1
Starch = 2
Veggies = 2
Fat = 2
and of course the fluids = 8

I developed my own "check off" system which I carry with me to track everything.  And I read everything, plan all of it ahead of time, etc...  Generally I plan for the week on Sundays.  For example I will make the taco casserole and divide it into individual servings, freeze those.  Then I will take my fruits, dairy, snacks, etc and pre-pack those so I can just grab and go every morning.  I always keep protein bars in my purse for those days where we have endless meetings and I can't leave to eat.  For me I find that I have to pre-plan all my meals and intake.  I generally leave things like nuts for my night snacks, which is when I get those crunchy cravings and have had a habit of grazing.  This helps me to stay true to the plan
