Stomach pain mystery solved
Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to get checked out. I was beginning to wonder
if pain was going to be my new norm. And....to be honest, I try to avoid the doctor like the
plague. I work for one, so the last thing I want to do is visit one.
Yesterday, I was doubled over at work. My manager drove me to a surgeon friend of my
employer. Thank God! He sent me for a CT scan and they found a hernia that measured
5 inches! It is filled with fluid and fat.
They have me scheduled next Tuesday to have an ultrasound guided aspiration. In layman's
terms....they are going to use an ultrasound machine to shove a needle in my abdomen
and drain the fluid that is causing the intense pain.
Then, next Thursday I am scheduled for a consult with my WL surgeon to discuss getting
the hernia repaired. I can't wait for this to be over, yet am incredibly thankful to know what
is causing so much pain.
I've never been so excited to have a needle poke! hehe.

This is wonderful news! I use to work in the medical field many years ago and we are our worst enemy when it comes to seeing doctors so I understand. You had your surgery 2 days after mine so I can't remember how long you have had this pain, but they found it and are going to repair it. You will be a new woman! Keep us posted, honey. Just read your post. Hoping everything works out for you and your procedure goes smoothly. Please, in the future, do not wait so long to seek medical treatment. I was sternly warned by my surgeon not to dismiss any stomach pain and hope it goes away. It could be very serious, such as a bowel obstruction, which can lead to death if not tended to promptly. A month ago I had to go to my local ER with severe stabbing stomach pains. I was rushed, via ambulance, to the hospital where my surgeon resides for emergency surgery. They found an internal hernia. "Petersen's Hernia" to be exact. My surgeon repaired the obstruction and stitched up the gap that had formed as a result. I spent 4 days in the hospital as a. Two weeks later I was back at my local ER, in the middle of the night, with more stabbing stomach pain. This time my stomach was distended and full of bile and "gastric juice" (yuk, lol). They rushed me into the operating room and discovered that the stitches they used to repair the "Petersen's Hernia" had become infected and my old or "unused" stomach had filled with gastric fluid. They removed the stitches and created a port to drain the fluid out of my stomach. They hooked me up to a suction device to remove the excess fluid. I continued to have severe stabbing stomach pain for at least 3 days afterwards. They administered strong IV pain killers, Fenatayal, around the clock. After the fourth day, my pain subsided to the point I was comfortable with oral pain killers (Ultram & Nocor). The doctor decided to not re-stitch my stomach as a lot of scar tissue formed in the two weeks after my initial surgery and it has naturally (or un-naturally) filled the void created around the "Petersen's Hernia".. I was sent home after four days, with pain killers and a follie (or folly) bag attached to my side. I was able to get the bag removed last Friday (thank God). I will have to put up with the tubes/ port on my side for three months until my stomach heals. It has been quite an ordeal for me. I am still recovering but feel a little better each day now.
I had my RNY in April of 2011. I have since, lost 160 lbs. I am ten pounds from reaching my goal weight.
