Question about Pain Meds

Don't know if anyone can answer this or not.   I received a bottle of hydrocodone for pain and it says I can take it 4 times a day for pain.  This is my 3rd day from surgery is it better to bare the pain a little and keep moving or did you take one Hydrocodone and then Tylenol to try to switch it up?  I don't want to over medicate, and I know the hydrocodone makes you constipated, so I'm worried about that too.  How did you all handle your pain meds?

thanks for your help.

I think I took my pain meds every 4 hours for the first 4-5 days....I had a hard time getting control of the pain when I first came out of surgery and was terrified of feeling that way again. By day 5-6, I was taking it maybe 3 times a day - morning, mid afternoon and before bed. By day 9-10 or so I was off all of it, since I went back to work on day 13.

I should have added, if you are uncomfortable, take it as prescribed, do not try to "bare" the pain.  You have had major surgery and don't have to suffer.

I had open surgery, so I took it regularly for an entire week.  When I had my lap gallbladder removal, though, I took it regularly for a couple of days and then only at night or if it was hurting a lot.  I did that mostly to avoid the constipation.

I had no pain, so I took it for a few days and then thought, whats the point of taking it if I'm not in pain? So I stopped. plus, it was gross.

I'd do both--keep moving and see if you can lower pain meds. Constipation is an issue you'll face sooner or later--you really can't avoid that issue.  Movement helps remove the surgical gas, and this is a source of pain for many post ops. DAVE

I was on liquid Lortab ( Norco) for 2 weeks for the surgery then switched to my normal Norco (10/325) because of knees and hip. I do take stool softeners and also powered fiber stuff.
DO NOT take tylenol if you are taking hydrocodone (5/500), Norco has less tylenol in it. If you are taking both make sure you are not taking to much tylenol.

I took liquid loratab when I was awake for like 3 days, then just tylenol. I healed really fast. I take hydrocodone 5/325 daily as needed for my back and have never had constipation. I guess it all depends on the person, take your meds as prescribed and slowly wean yourself as you tolerate it. I hope you feel better soon!
