I have not had my dietician appointment yet to go over pre op diet and post op stuff.

My hospital gives out these binders with information and what not. I was reading through some last night and found the section about post op diet. it says the first week post op is clear liquids only. I thought protein shakes would be allowed...for nutritional purposes if nothing else.

anyone else have clear liquid only for the week following surgery?

I did clear liquids in the hospital and was sent home with instructions to continue them. My NUT tried to get me to try puree but it made sick so i stayed on anything liquid but added protein powder to it. As long as you take your vitamins and minerals your nutrition should be ok.

it really depends on your surgeon and dietician team. Following surgery, I only had clear liquids for 2 weeks, but i only wanted water. i didn't want ANYTHING else. I didn't have RTD protein shakes until 4 weeks because it was too thick.

Good luck. When is your surgery date?

My surgery date is 12/21/12. The thing that confuses me though is it also says I cannot start taking vitamins and mineral supplements until they give me authorization to do so, usually at my one week post op appt or later. I guess it seems insane that we could heal and function after a major surgery with nothing bu****er.

Apparently protein shakes aren't permitted by your surgeon for a week. Different surgeons as different guidelines.

My surgeon's plan was very liberal. I was only on clear liquids for a day and a half after surgery. I was on full liquids the following day, and on Day Four (the day I went home (my RNY was open)) I was on soft foods and had a couple of small bites of cream of wheat and scrambled eggs. I had a very small piece of moist chicken at the end of my second week post-op.

I am 8 days post op. I was released from hospital on clear liquid diet only until I see the Dr. November 7th. I called the Dr. office on Wednesday to clarify if only clear liquid or full liquid and was told I could do full liquids until Dr. visit, and at that time we will discuss soft food diet if it agrees with me. I can drink protein drinks now. the main reason for clear liquids is for your new stomach to be reintroduced to fluids and to allow you time to adjust, and for your internal sutures to begin healing.

While on clear liquids, you can use clear protein drinks like Isopure or Cytomax.  I was only on clear liquids while in the hospital, but Cytomax is what they gave me there.

Hydration is much more important than nutrition in the early weeks - so many newbies end up in the ER because they find drinking is difficult ...  Well, it is for everybody, but it's what you have to do - it's non negotiable!

Once you have the drinking 64oz + down, it's so much easier to work protein into your day as and when you can ... and within a few weeks, most of us are doing just fine with both!
