Curious if this is something they always do or maybe I can avoid it.

Ask your surgeon.
I did not have one.My surgeon wants us up walking to pee ASAP.

Are you sure you did not have one that was simply removed before you came out of the anesthesia? Except for very short procedures, they usually use one.

Generally, yes, but very often they remove it before you are awake again. If they put it in after you are "out" and remove it before you are awake, you won't even know it.

My  Dr. does not use a Foley catheter.  I've had them before and they didn't bother me for other surgeries.

Come keep it real in R&R 3.0 Want an invite? PM me here.

I didn't get one, however I had surgery at about 4pm and was not allowed to eat or drink after midnight the day before.  They had me use the restroom immediately prior to surgery.  I do agree though, if they are going to use one, they'll wait til you're out and they'll remove it before you're awake.  The only one that can answer you properly is your surgeon.

My surgeon does Foley, but they put it in while I was out and removed it first thing the next morning. I was really out of it most of the time I had it in & didn't hurt at all coming out. Just a little uncomfortable once or twice is all I remember of that day!

For me they inserted one while I was out, and they left it in until about 4 hours after I got out of surgery when I was going to get up and walk for the first time.  If they had taken it out before I awoke, I never would have known I had one.

My surgeon told me they do not use them during surgery, but expect patients to get up ASAP to potty.

I plan to ask him, but I was just curious with other experiences. I had a surgery in March that was oughly the same length of time in the OR and that surgeon did not use one (I did ask because I had a kidney infection shortly after), so I was just wondering with others experiences.
