Ever heard of somebody washing out of the pre-op diet?

I'm honestly afraid that I'm not going to be able to do the pre-op liquid diet. I have done 24 hours and can't believe how sick I am --- shaking like a leaf, so incredibly weak. I have to take care of my six year old grandchild, but I can't even keep the protein shakes down. This is wimpy, but they're just awful.

I'm sorry --- I feel bad. I admire all you folks who actually have done this. I had no idea how hard it was. I'm sorry to be such a wuss.

I'm sorry you're feeling so bad. Have you tried a different protein shake? Maybe one that taste better. The first three days are usually the hardest, but you'll get there. Do you have diabetes? Have you checked your blood sugar levels? That could be where your shakiness is coming from. Hope you start feeling better!

Thanks, Missy! I have non-reactive hypoglycemia, at least so I'm told.

Hi, I don't have hypoglycaemia myself but I have seen it.  A bit off the subject but my pony had it. No joke. Iv never come across anyone that's had it but from what you describe that was how old "drury" looked. Tired and shaky. There wasn't much I could do for him being a horse,  but I'd say your doctor will know how to help you.

Just give them a quick call, might help you at least stop worrying.

If I could not handle the pre-op diet, I would not have the surgery. Talk to your surgeon, but if you cannot find a type of shake that you can handle, you won't make it through the post-op period, either.

Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

I don't think this is true. There are plenty of people who have succeeded who have never had a protein shake. There are other ways to get your protein.

It does not matter what others do. Her surgeon requires a pre-op and, assumably, post-op liquid diet. If she cannot follow that plan she should not have the surgery unless she finds another surgeon. Why do this if you are not able to do the stated plan from the get go?

I guess the problem is with the presumption that there is a post-op liquid diet.  There might not be a strict requirement, or her doctor might be able to change it for her.  You suggested she talk to her doctor.  I agree.  Maybe there is a way her doctor can find to work around this problem.  I was simply letting her know that just because she can't handle the protein shakes doesn't mean she should forever count out this surgery.  Your post seemed to suggest that.

You need to call your doctor. What kind of protein shake are you on? It might be too sugary or carby and causing issues. A change might make all the difference. Good luck!
