Is melatonin safe for a bypass patient?

I've had chronic insomnia for the better part of a decade and have taken Melatonin pre & postop. One thing I noticed is I'd had to take a bit more than most "non-ops" in my first year: anywhere from 20-40mg! My insomnia was worse when I had OSA and sleep dr put me on Ambien for a spell but I preferred a non-medical treatment of insomnia. Also, sleep dr said to bear with the hormonal impact of rapid weight loss & insomnia. I've never had side effects from natural meds (melatonin, l-theanine, 5-HTP, glycine) but had really bizarre side effects from Ambien...
