Update on my dehydration

This morning when I woke up I had absolutely no strength so I took everyone's advice from my post last night plus my surgeons and went to the ER. They told me I was very very dehydrated. My blood pressure was crazy as well. I got two rounds of iv fluids and was feeling better. About 4 hours ago I started getting what I think is diarrhea again...plus I vomited. Ugh will this ever end?

When I was in the room getting iv the lady across from me had her gastric bypass a few months ago and was in there for the same reason...dehydration. Was nice to have someone I could talk to who understood what I was going through. I was shocked that it took 30 minutes to get from registration to triage and then hooked up on iv.

I'm glad they took you seriously at the ER.  I had to go to the ER twice for IV fluids after my RNY.  Are you able to drink now?  Do you have meds for the nausea?  You should be able to take something like Immodium for the diarrhea, too, but I would check with your surgeon first.  You want to try to keep the diarrhea and vomiting under control, though, so you don't get dehydrated again.

Thanks! Ya I have meds for nausea and I have lomitil for diarrhea. I really thought I was doing good on my fluids but I think that round of bad diarrhea I had made me go downhill :(

feeling a little better today though :)

Glad to hear you went to the ER. At least you have been treated for what you thought was wrong. With the other woman that was there for the same reason and reading about dehydration on here, leaves me wondering if this is a common thing with WLS. I know getting fluids in is very important. Just seems alot have problems doing that and end up in the ER. Hope your feeling better soon and can get on with feeling good about losing weight. Good Luck.

I don't believe this is common but I do see it occur a lot on this board - it's like it's become the attention complication du jour.

What people don't want to hear is that unless you have something physically wrong with you, you don't get a choice as to whether to drink or not!  People say it makes them feel sick, but guess what?   Dehydration makes you feel sick!   No one expects you to chug 64 oz down on day one - but you do have to make a really BIG effort to drink - it's not a negotiable ...

Water tends to be easier to drink if something is added - and you should be prepared to try absolutely everything.   Getting a gurgling pouch or hiccups is NOT an excuse to not drink!!!   If you are going to make that a complication, be prepared to be a "patient" for the rest of your life!!!

Great reply. I know some find it hard to drink water per se, but they try to drink it like they did pre op - cold, over ice, and it sometimes doesn't work. I had a post op friend who could only get her water in with warm de-caf tea. worked for her and she never had dehydration. Some can only do Crystal Light. Room temp water, decaf tea, decaf coffee, bottled, filtered or flavored water. It all works but we NEED it to maintain health and lose weight - not to mention it greatly helps the hanging skin later on. Hydrated skin snaps back - dry, leather like skin won't. I had the nausea from drinking cause I was already dehydrated - you have to suck it up and go through it - force the water and it's amazing how soon you feel better- in all areas of your life. Works wonders - and now there's a million additives you can put in a bottle of water. No reason for dehydration anymore- not when we're told how much to drink and when.

thanks.

Kim ! so what is the best possible scenario for me. Recently just had RNY on 9/11/2013, and I am unable to get to recommend daily 64 oz .  The most I can get in a day is about 16 oz. it feels me up really quick.  So far no vomiting or diarrhea. laugh

Just keep plugging away ...

I think there is a big myth on here that if you are NOT drinking 64oz every day that you MUST be dehydrated!  Absolutely not!   There are many people that rarely drink that amount - EVER - hence the First Lady's new initiative!  It's a great goal for health, because drinking water is good for you, but it's really not a necessity for most of us!   And it really does not have to be water - it can be tea, broth, popsicles - anything that you are able to do.

Sip, sip, sip, walk, walk, walk is still the best advice EVER after surgery!!!

I had to go to the ER twice as well for fluids as a result of dehydration, but the reason was an undiagnosed stricture.  I also had a lot of trouble drinking at first and could only sip a little bit at a time, though that was not the reason for my dehydration issues.
