Down 31 lbs in 3 days!! Has anyone else had this happen during the pre-op fast?

Has to be loss of fluid (unless she was burning 1400 calories an hour for three days straight.)  That is a lot of excess fluid, though, and would raise a red flag for me, too.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but if you lost 30 pounds in 3 days, you lost a lot of water.  In order to have lost 30 pounds of fat you would have had to achieved a caloric deficit of about 105,000 calories in those three days, which would be 35,000 calories each day.  Even consuming zero calories, that would require you to have burned about 1400 calories every hour of the day!

I never said I lost fat I said I lost 31 lbs. So you aren't downing anything here. As a RN I know what to look for and I do not have any signs or symptoms of dehydration but I will get a full work up on the 18th and that will assess my electrolytes status. I was on a low sodium diet as I have high blood pressure. I am actually getting more sodium no with broth than I was prior to the surgery.

I lost 35 lbs prior to surgery but it took me 12 weeks to do it. I did however lose 25lbs in 3 days one time but that was after my c-section and I was so swollen I could barely walk. The doc prescribed me a prescription diuretic and I peed for 3 days straight and lost 25 lbs.  I'm guessing the pre-op diet took you away from something you were consuming with a high sodium content that was causing you to retain fluid. That's ok, to me a lb is a lb whether it's fat or fluid,,lol

Amen..lol And I was eating pretty low sodium to help control my blood pressure and I am maintaining a 118/73 with 75-80 heart rate it used to be much higher. I did select low sodium chicken and beef broth so maybe that along with no solid food is what I need to get rid of that excess water. :)

If this turns out to be so, it is excessive and maybe needs to be mentioned to a doc - especially if you are on diuretics.   If all is ok, well done, but don't come and complain that you are not losing 10lbs per day after surgery .

I called him and he agrees I have no signs or symptoms of dehydration, blood pressure is stable and getting the appropriate protein and water intake.. he is not concerned unless any of those things change. LOL I have prepared myself to lose hardly anything in the beginning so anything I lose will be unexpected surprise and fully appreciated! LOL

My pre op weight loss was faster than the weeks afterwards.  I was given too much IV fluid in the hospital.  34 lbs to much so I really don't have a way to judge what I would have lost and how fast.  The speed that you lose isn't as important as maintaining a good balance of water and protein intake.

Yeah I am getting in 108g protein/ 2 g carb per protein shake and that is 4 times a day plus unlimited SF juice/water/jello/broth. Thanks for the advice. I guess I am just shocked cause I have been working my butt off to get the scale to change then boom thuis fast has jump started things fast than I expected. 20 pounds could come back tmrw you never know with water weight lol

Being that you are a nurse, as am I, you realize in 3 days you have:

1. urinated 13 liters in 3 days

2. 13,000 ml of fluid in 3 days.

3. Urinated 180 ml per hour EVERY hour for 3 straight days ???

4. LOST electrolytes

If I had a patient that lost 3o pounds in 3 days I would:

1. REWEIGH them

2. Check their electrolytes. It is NOT possible to still be balanced after 13,ooo ml fluid loss in 3 days!!

3. CALL THE DOCTOR.....your PCP too.

If you say that 20 pounds can come on overnight, you must be in congestive heart failure. NO ONE gains that much overnight

not even the worst CHF patients. I have been an CICU nurse 20 years so I know fluid balance very well.

Please have yourself weighed again at your MD's office.......
