I am 3 1/2 months post RNY surgery and my hair is totally falling out! I was told that this could happen, but it's really bad! Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what did you do about it?

I am 6 months post op and my hair has been falling out for the last 3 months.  Other than cleaning the sink and floors everyday, I'm not doing anything but waiting for it to pass.

I lost hair from months 4 - 7....I'm sure it was more noticeable to me than others even tho it was upsetting.....it is now coming back in...it's like I have two different hairdos!! It will pass...just hang in there. (I'm 11 months post-op. It has been growing back for a few months)

I started losing mine at 4 months out. My hair was already thin! If it doesn't stop falling soon, I may have to start shopping for a wig. Right now I hide the hair loss by using Joan Rivers Great Hair Day fill in powder. You can order it from Amazon.

Me too!  My husband says I should get a red wig!

MOST people experience hair loss after RNY.  It is just a question of how much.  There really isn't anything you can do about it.  It is called telogen effluvium if you want to do an Internet search on it.  Getting enough protein and getting all your vitamins in will help keep it from being any worse (because both protein deficiency and certain vitamin deficiencies can cause hair loss) but nothing will lessen or prevent it.  biotin is often recommended, but there is no evidence that it does anything other than encourage healthy regrowth.

Keeping it trimmed (so the ends don't look thin or "scraggly") or getting it cut shorter will help it look fuller.  Unless you lose a LOT of hair though (and some of us do) many people won't even notice because your face is getting thinner.

My hair started falling out like crazy at 4.5 months. It slowed at 7 months - today I am 8 months and I finally feel like I am losing a normal amount of hair.  Finally.

I probably lost 1/4 - 1/3 of the thickness.  You can't tell unless you look at my hairline; so I just don't put my hair up.

Both my SIL and I had RNY on June 19th and are in the same boat.  Fortunately I had thicker hair to begin with, but I feel like it is super thin now!  No one else notices, but I do!  I'm trying not to freak out and tell myself that it won't be this way forever!

My RNY was June 19 too! How's it going for you?

Still a few rough days every now and then, but overall very good.  I was 295 the day of surgery and am 249 now.  My SIL is almost exactly the same, so it's nice to know it's normal (some people are way ahead of me, but I'm perfectly content with how fast I'm losing)!!!  Getting lots of comments over the last week of people noticing the weight loss now.  As I said, stressed about the hair loss, but I suppose it comes with the territory!  It feels so much thinner to me and I feel like I leave an entire wookie in the shower/sink when I wash/comb my hair.  How are things with you?
