Carbs and stuff

Hi all!

I had RNY surgery in October. Would someone please give me an idea of how many carbs, sugar, calories per day are acceptable. i am just looking for an idea, it doesn't have to be engraved in stone.

i love fruit and eat it everyday and i'm afraid it's too high in everything for me. i don't get sick from it, but will it slow my weight loss down? let me know what you think.

I think that whole, unprocessed fruits are among the best things you can possibly eat (along with vegetables and whole grains).  As long as you get enough protein I wouldn't impose any real limit on your fruit.  Nobody ever got fat on fruit.

My program doesn't really track daily carbs, sugar, or calories so I cannot be much help.  The best I have is that by the 6-month mark, I was around 1,000-1,300 calories per day.

One of the things I have read here pretty regularly is that fruit CAN make you fat and to go lightly with it.

I am at the 8 1/2 month mark and am maxed at 800 a day, though I really am closer to 700 a day.

My carbs are very limited and my fats are to be from good fats, such as avodaco, cheese, yogurt and nuts, only. No butter, no added fats to items.

The differences between programs are pretty vast, OP, so I'd stick to what was outlined to you in your surgery after care packet.

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

I really don't think anyone's raspberry habit drove them to gastric bypass surgery, nor is anyone fighting a 20-pound regain because they can't put down the apples.  Certainly someone whose weight is creeping up is consuming excess calories from somewhere but I bet in almost all cases there's a bigger culprit than the cantaloupe.

Anyways, I'm glad you've found a path that works for you.  :)

What about a raspberry ketone habit?

For that matter, it's not veggies, or poultry, fish, pork or even beef that made us fat. The biggest culprit, by far, is junk, and mostly processed carbs.

Almost universally, programs want you to focus on protein first, which seems to be anywhere from 60 to 90 grams a day. After that, limit the volume you eat at any one time. If you do those things well, your carbs, sugar and fat should all be acceptable.

I'm sorry if that is vague, but there is wide variety in the particulars and individuals. Don't overthink it.

I was instructed by my doctor and nutritionist to not eat fruit alone.  It should always be paired with a protein.  The protein helps prevent dumping, if you are so inclined, and is also good nutritional advice, especially for RNY patients (because we're supposed to concentrate on protein).

I agree.... about the fruit not making you fat.  Raspberry habit -- LOL;  I also think everyone is very different.  I think people get too obsessed over SLOW weight loss.  If you want to lose lightening fast - I am sure people would tell you that all protein and very limited calories is the way to go.  Does it matter how fast it is if you keep losing?  Doesn't it really go back to calories in and calories out?  I can't just eat protein and shakes and stuff -- I have to be able to eat food -- and fruits are part of that.  So are carbs.  My plan doesn't count carbs really. Mine counts calories.  So that is what I have done so far.  I stay under 15 grams of sugar because I feel bad if I do not. I also try to exercise 4-5 times per week and keep my calories at around 1200.  One day my menu may look perfect and protein forward - but another day it may involve mac & cheese and milk duds - but I watch my calories on those days too.

I just chatted with my NUT about this yesterday. She is recommending I add a little more fruit into my diet because I only eat fruit 2-4 times a month. I always do protein first, then veggies like spinach salads or steamed veggies. I don't worry about anything except protein, fat and sugar grams. I log every bite into myfitnesspal and it calculates the rest for me. On average, I eat about 800 calories, made up of 41% protein, 33% carbs and 25% fat.
