Hair and nails have many similarities. It could be a protein deficiency, or vitamins. Hair loss is extremely common, nail issues aren't.
Have you had a complete set of labs done?

No, it's not related to the hair loss that is typically experienced after surgery. The hair loss is due to telogen effluvium and it's a reaction to the general anesthesia.
Nail problems are most likely related to a nutritional deficiency. Are you getting enough protein? Taking 1500 mg calcium citrate (not carbonate)?
Did you get your six months labs done yet? What was your vitamin A level?

I've yet to have my 6 month visit, but I'm taking 1500 mg of calcium citrate and I'm usually between 60-70 for my protein intake daily. The doctor was pleased with my labs during my last visit. But I think I'll give him a call and tell him about this new frail nail development. Thanks for the input everyone.
Adding a B complex, if you're not already taking one, might help with the nails, too. But get labs done and make sure you check your vitamin A.
If you're getting that much protein and taking that much calcium, then those aren't causing it.
