can anyone tell me how long it took them to have a bowel movement after RNY? I'm two days post op and haven't gone which after surgery probably isn't all that unusual, however I feel so full I can't force one more sip into me. Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Thanks!

The hospital told me if I had not had a bowel movement in 5 days to contact my dr.

Thank you! Were you able to drink all of your protein shake and water in the beginning?

Yes I was able to get it all in I am not sure why I can drink quite a bit at a time with no issues that is something I will have to talk with my dr about too!

Stool softeners are a good thing;  also, Miralax is a wonderful addition.  If you're really plugged up, good ol' Milk of Magnesia is terrific.

Definitely get input from your surgeon re: what to use, but these three things are often the best thing to keep on hand.  You'll find out what works best for you.

I will definitely call in Monday and buy some miralax in the meantime.  Thanks.

Don't understand your comment about can't force one more dip into me - are you talking about food or a suppository?  Do not try to force food in to make it come out the other end, which it sounds you are trying to do.  It sounds as though you are eating too much at one time if you feel so full you can't force anymore.  Stop before you feel that full, even if it was only a small amount. Your stomach will adjust without forcing.

2 days is not too long because you are not eating much at this phase.  Your dr prob gave you a list of laxatives to use.  When needed, I use benefiber in yogurt every 2 -3 days.

Also, search for 'Constipation' here and you will see the issues and remedies people are using.

I am still on the liquid diet. My nutritionist said that in order to meet my protein and water goals that I needed to drink two ounces of protein shake and three ounces of water every hour. I was told the best way to achieve this was by setting a timer and taking a small sip every five minutes, which is what I've been doing.  By about the third hour I am so full and miserable I can't drink another sip.

In the beginning you won't be able to get it all in.  Your new pouch is likely very swollen, just do the best that you can.  Using something like Miralax will help you have a bowel movement.  I didn't go for about 5 days after surgery and struggled with constipation pretty badly early on.  just focus on your fluids and definitely talk to your surgeon at your next appointment.

Congrats and welcome to the losers bench!
