Thanks for this! I couldn't find my notes on what could and couldn't be taken with each other so I've just been winging it and taking everything by itself until I see the RN next month.

Seriously people, print Grim's post and tape it to your refrigerator. This is critical truth.

Just a quick note or comment on the discounter/liquidator calcium. I was at my support group last night and they made a big announcement to avoid those off brands. Apparently they've seen a rash of patients in the last six months showing signs of calcium deficiency (3 cases were specifically referenced). And although completely unrelated (none of the 3 knew each other), they all were buying Dollar Store off brand calcium. I just mention because they made a very specific point last night. The topic was taking vitamins. Ha.

Finding calcium citrate is a bit harder than finding calcium carbonate. Carbonate is cheaper and most commonly found in over the counter supplements. It is also harder for RNY patients to utilize. No doubt Dollar Store calcium is carbonate and the reason why patients are showing deficiencies.

I pretty much pretend any multivitamin I take has no calcium and iron and always take them separately regardless of what the bottle says.

The reality is that while it's mildly inconvenient for me to take vitamins 4-6 times a day, osteoporosis and neurological issues are far more inconvenient down the road. It's also much harder to get some vitamin levels up quickly after they tank. Ask me about the sordid drama of attempting to get my vitamin D over 15 which rivals any korean or chinese soap opera for pure absurdity. It's a pain to say the least.

Far better to just not mess with it.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

The calcium in most multivitamins is carbonate, and is used as a binder, to hold the tablet together. So it really is best just to ignore it.
