Type 2 Diabetes
Revision on 01/14/14
Good evening,
I am considering the Sleeve and the RNY, has anyone had any luck with the resolution of this condition with the sleeve. I am on oral medication currently down to an A1C of 5.9. I would appreciate any help
Thanks,
Darrick

I feel what I consider to be normal hunger. Every 3-6 hours during the day, depending on the time of day. But you have to understand that I've lived my entire life hungry all of the time, so what I feel now is blessed relief. It's totally controllable, I don't feel like I have to run out and get food RIGHT NOW! and my small high protein meals satisfy me. Although I do admit that I miss chewing sometimes.

I am glad to hear this Stephanie. They always refer to the RNY as the gold standard curing diabetes and all but the thought of dumping just scares me.
I'm sure you will hear from others like me.
I had Type 2 for 3 years and it was getting worse. I was on Metformin and insulin shots daily; my A1C was 7.5 and going up every time I went to the Dr. I weighed 424 lbs but was surprisingly fit for a guy that big - lots of golf, yard work, etc. But I saw the future - it wasn't a good sight. So I went through the process and had sleeve surgery 11/23/10. I stopped my diabetes meds a few days pre-op and guess what - I came home from the hospital without diabetes. I lost 24 lbs. pre-op and I'm sure that helped, but I was astonished that everything worked so quickly. Now, 12 weeks and a total of 80 lbs. lower, I no longer have sleep apnea, high blood pressure or diabetes. I'm 65 and looking forward to many more years with my young grandkids and my young-at-heart wife. My decision in favor of the sleeve was based on many things, including the long-term prospect of having a reasonably "normal" diet. The RNY is fine - but it was a bit too extreme for me. Good luck in your decision making. Hope this helps.

I have Type II diabetes. I was sleeved six weeks ago. Was on Metformin 1,000 mg. 2x daily. I took Lantus, 30 units in the morning, and NovoLog 15 units at meal coverage. Since my sleeve, I am off all Metformin and NovoLog and am down to 13 units of Lantus. My endocrinologist thinks I will be off the Lantus in another 20-25 lbs. and will have reversed my diabetes.

when I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes on October, my doctor talked about WLS for the first time.
honestly, I freaked out so much about getting diabetes that even though I was a carb addict all my life, I decided to stop eating carbs by myself in December. a month later I did the exam again and my a1c went back to 5.9 - which my PCP does not consider pre-diabetic, only high normal.
as I did not trust that I could keep taking care of myself like that forever, even in stress moments, I had VSG. I am pretty confident I won't be at risk for diabetes again.
me too, as been said by emelar, have only normal hunger now. it's a relief!
