Coffee? Whats the dealy -O
Hello everyone! Im a week post OP and doing well staying on track fighting these demons in my head constantly yearning for foods and bad habits which i have been victorious over the past week. I have a coffee question..... I miss my morning cup of coffee? I know i cant possibly fit a whole cup but a 1/4 of a cup? would that be terrible. Can someone give me insight as to why i shouldnt and cant? im open to learning !!!!
My surgeon says no caffeine until at least 3 months post-op. My Delonghi super-automatic espresso maker sits, neglected, in the kitchen. I tried decaf, but post-op it really doesn't taste good. This weekend I tried a regular (I'm two months post op) and a few swallows convinced me that I'm not ready yet. Kind of made me feel bad the rest of the day, stomach-wise. It also didn't taste that great.
As with everything with this surgery, your experience will be different most likely. But I think the general concensus is to be very slow with the caffeine...

I find that warm liquids are easier for me to get down, so I drink a decaf, sugar-free, non-fat lattee every morning for breakfast. I was absolutely certain that once you took the sugar, fat, AND caffiene out of the mix it would be completely tasteless- but I was pleasantly surprised. I say go for it, but definitely stick to decaf for the time being.
You should really call your surgeon's office and ask what his/her policy is on coffee. My surgeon's policy was officially 6 weeks before I could have coffee, but when I saw him at 3 weeks I asked about it, and he gave me the go-ahead. So, check with them and do what they say. Before you know it you'll be free to have whatever healthy foods you want. :)

Officially, my surgeon's plan says decaf after 2 weeks, regular after 3 months. Unofficially, I was told "after 5 days, any coffee I want." I take a daily PPI, have been drinking coffee since day 6 and have had absolutely no problems other than it getting cold.
HOWEVER - first, follow YOUR surgeon's plan for YOU, and second, always try new foods/drinks in small portions and at home. If something disagrees with you that you're allowed and want to be able to eat/drink, try a small portion of it again in 2-3 weeks.
