Having Problems with medication ... was fine BEFORE VSG
I did a search and really couldn't find an answer to this.
I have been taking Cymbalta for about a year and I am 6 months out from surgery. Results from my pre-op endoscopy showed extensive erosions due to NSAID use. I have not taken NSAIDs since that procedure.
I had absolutely NO issues with taking the medication before surgery, but after, I started having stomach pain (cramping type pain, not diarrea) no matter when I took it or when I took it. Please note that I also had problems with taking acid reducers after surgery. It didn't matter if I opened up the capsule and poured it onto applsauce or swallowed the entire pill. Both the Cymbalta AND the acid reducer in capsule XR forms cause me stomach upset when I take it.
Fast forward 6 months and I can take tablet forms of acid reducers without any stomach issues. I still cannot take the Cymbalta without having the same stomach problems.
I hate this because the Cymbalta is so effective when I take it consistently. Unfortunately, I have not been able to take it regularly since the surgery because of the pain.
Has anyone else had any changes or issues with meds that they took before the surgery without issue? Has anyone had specific problems with XR meds or with Cymbalta after surgery?
Thanks!

I'm still pre-op, surgery in 2 weeks, but I was told by my Dr. that I wouldn't be able to take any extended release medications after the surgery.

THis is a great question. I thought you could still take extended release meds after the sleeve. I take an XR med so I'm curious to find out others' input. I've been alternating between going with the sleeve or RNY and one plus for the sleeve was that I could continue on my XR (whereas I could not with RNY).
OMG! I had a huge problem with Cymbalta after my sleeve... My surgeon, hospital, psych eval, nutrititionist, and internist were just fine with me taking the Cymbalta extended release.. Let me say day 5 after surgery I hit bottom... They had me opening the capsuls and taking.. Well I was a mess I was convinced I was going crazy. My pcp found me a bariatric counselor because I was a mess. The first meeting with her and she asked me my typical day and when I started telling her taking my meds she stopped me. Apparently Cymbalta with sleevers have issues because of the extended release.. She said that my sleeve wasn't able to absorb as needed and especially since I was opening them up... She said I was also going thru withdrawals from the cymbalta.. I was being double slammed.. She recommeneded Lexapro which is in tablet form and I can swallow.. Since day 3 of that pill ( I am a little over a week out on it) I have noticed a huge improvement. I was on Cymbalta for 6 years and wow this is like I am getting my life back.. It gets better every day.. On a side note it seems the Cymbalta was working for aches and pains because after I got on Lexapro with no more Cymbalta my knee started hurting.. I am back on NSAIDS and doubled up on my acid blocker so its getting ironed out.. Call your dr and dont stop until you get it fixed...
