Pre-op question- kind of embarrasing

I'm still pre-op and have been doing very well with losing weight and making sure I have increased my veggie intake.  The past three days I have gotten gas bubbles in my stomach which make me uncomfortable and I end up burping like a drunk.  The first day I thought oh, it's just the hummus I ate.  Then it happened again last night after I had dinner: boneless skinless chicken thigh seasoned with Mrs Dash, a small Baked potato and corn.  Well, It's happened again today and it started even before dinner and all I ate before dinner was some leftover chicken.(I slept very late into the afternoon today due to my Fibromyalgia so I missed breakfast) and then for dinner I had a small piece of steak and some broccoli.  I haven't had any soda in almost a week.  I've been drinking crystal light in a covered plastic cup that has a straw.  Because of my Fibromyalgia my hands can be very weak so after ruining one work keyboard my husband bought me this cup and I am banned from glassware.  Do you think it could be the straw?  Or something to do with my diet.  I'm tired of taking Gas-X every night.   I would have asked at the surgeon's yesterday, but I thought it was a one night thing because of the hummus.  Or maybe I'm just eating too fast.  Anyone have any ideas or tips to rule out possibilities.  Do you think it warrants a call to the surgeon?  I'm in the process of setting up all of my specialist visits so maybe I should wait until I see the GI doctor.  I just know this bloat is so annoying.

I am pre-op as well and don't have the same issues but if you are preparing for surgery here is what I was recommended to do:

-Stop drinking with a straw (this makes you drink too fast and take in air)
-Slow down drinking, use a sports bottle instead of a glass or cup
-Slow down with eating, chew 20 times per bite (it takes 20 minutes for your brain to realize you are full and your sleeve wont be able to break down foods as well so you need to chomp them up

I believe broccoli can cause gas, it could very well be the foods you are eating.

Other then that I am not sure. I would certainly take gas-x if it provides relief and ask your PCP or surgeon if it continues to be a bother.

Good luck!

It sounds like each day you've eaten something that can effect the digestive system...beans in the hummus, the corn, and the brocolli.  You might try something like green beans or carrots...
You also didn't mention what you're eating the rest of the day--are you doing food all day,or atr you using protein shakes?  If doing shakes, you might look for something in therm you're sensitiver to.
Good luck.

I think it's the change in diet and what I'm eating.  My breakfast generally consists of cheerios and 2 small bananas, or 2 scrambled eggs.  Lunch is tough because I often end up skipping it do to sleeping late or napping due to my Fibromyalgia fatigue.  When I do have lunch it can range from the leftover protein from the night before to tuna mixed with a little mustard on a whole wheat sandwich thin.  Snacking is rare, but when I do it's fruit or a 100 calorie pack or some almonds.  I know I shouldn't be skipping meals and I'm working on it.  I did discuss it with my surgeon's office at my appointment on Monday.  As I lose more weight I will hopefully have more energy and not have to worry about skipping meals.

If you are new to vegetables, that change in your diet will make you gassy for a while but that should pass when your body adjusts to "healthy food."  I have a tough time with Mrs. Dash.  I believe there is a lot of garlic and onion powder in them and that's what bothers me.  You may want to eliminate that from your diet and see if that helps.  Congratulations on modifying your diet and preparing for your new life.

Do you take Lyrica for you Fibromyalgia, does it help?  Good luck to you and hang in there!

I am new to eating so many veggies.  I've never noticed any issues with Mrs. Dash before, but I'm going to keep an eye on it.

I do not take Lyrica for my Fibromyalgia.  I tried Lyrica and another drug called Neurontin and had horrible side effects with both so I am currently only taking an anti-depressant, an anti-anxiety drug and a pain med as needed(Tramadol and it doesn't help much).  I'm currently out of work on short term disability for the past few weeks due to a flare up and am waiting to see a new doctor because the two doctors I have seen have not been able to help.  My current doctor actually said there's nothing else I can do for you and I've only been seeing him since March.  I'm hoping the surgery helps with my symptoms, but I've heard stories that it doesn't.  It doesn't matter though because I'll be healthier anyway.

Sorry to hear of your trouble.  I'm sure that significant weight loss will improve your health and your symptoms of depression and anxiety will ease up if not go away all together.  Good luck getting back to work...you need to fight through this and be mentally tough.  Focus on all the good that is coming your way with this life changing surgery.  Best regards,  Greg
