Greetings!

This is my first post to the VSG discussion board.  I had my VSG on 10/8/12, so I am two weeks post-op.  I have lost more weight than I expected to lose by this point, so I am very happy about that.  However, I have found that I am constantly watching the Food Network and looking at recipes.  I do crave real food, but I am not feeling hungry.  Am I just living vicariously through Guy Fieri and Giada, or is this something that I should be concerned about?  I know it sounds silly, but I recognize that I have an issue with food, or I wouldn't have had the surgery.  I just don't want to fall back into the same old bad habits.

I am having a really hard time drinking the protein supplements.  All the ones that  I have purchased from my doctor's office are sweet - I rarely drink sweet things, I prefer unsweetened iced tea, no sugar in my coffee, etc.  I have been drinking more soups/broths, but of course the protein content is quite low.  I have my first post-op appointment on Thursday the 25th, and would like to be prepared in advance to be able to actually eat something for dinner.  I am seeing references to eggs, soft cheeses, oatmeal, etc. as options during this next phase.  Anything else I should be looking at?

I am also having trouble getting in all my water - which I didn't before.  I feel so full all the time.  Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Food Network and Frisco's yummy food posts were my crack for the first month after surgery. It stopped when I could eat normal food again.

There are a gazillion protein shake/drink/meal products out there. You can order variety sample packs for most of them.

I ended up finding one I could tolerate, plugging my nose and drinking it. I don't go for taste when it comes to the protein shakes. But, that's just me.

When you think about meals, this is a good time to decide what is most important to your longterm success. Start picking things (even in the mushy stage) that are the best benefit to you. Take a look at your food plan and figure out what you need to eat first, because here's the thing, your capacity is smaller. It's kind of like going from a mansion to a 1 bedroom appt. You have to use your space wisely.

So, that said. I eat protein first. Always. If there is room for more then I can have some veggies.

Good luck.

I have a friend who got VSG about 2 years ago now and she constantly watches the food network. LOL I dont think it is a problem. She will ocassionally cook a recipe and just have a tiny bite or sometimes none at all. So I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Also get UNJURY chicken soup broth!! 21 gram protien in 8 ounces and it has really good reviews. I am still preop but I plan on making that a big part of my liquid diet ;)

Thanks for the replies.  I am also having issues with regulating my body temp - I was always too warm, and now I am cold all the time!    I am NOT complaining though...

I was sleeved on 10/12 and I'm not hungry either but MAN, I love watching cooking shows (I loved to do that even before the sleeve), I love reading the "what are you eating today?" posts, I love watching my husband eat, etc It's a bit like food porn I think LOL  I'm still on liquids too so I think it's really just a mental thing but I'm sure once we start eating food again, the constant need to watch/read about food will go away a bit.  Hang in there!

band to sleeve revision and loving life!

It's normal to do this after surgery.  I was watching Dr. Oz and it actually said tha****ching these shows increased ghrelin levels! lol too bad that parts gone right?!  I think it's actually the brains way of trying to get the satisfaction it used to have.  I'm not saying you were addicted...but I was and I did the same thing.  When I couldn't binge anymore after surgery...I'd just cry and wonder why I did this to myself.

Try the Unjury Chicken soup I really like that one and you get 20 grams of protein.

I love Food Network.  Now that I have a small stomach, the food I eat has to be amazing.  No plain chicken breasts for this girl.  I get recipe ideas and tweek them to be sleeve friendly.

There are some protein broths out there.  I personally didn't care for the Unjury brand, but the healthwise chicken and beef broth were great.

As far as the liquids go - 64 oz seemed like a huge feat for the first few weeks.  I had a 1 oz shot glass and sipped it over 10 minutes.  I did that 64 times a day and was able to hit my goal.  The 1 oz made it seem much more doable!

Good luck and congrats!

That is a good idea about the shot glass.  I may have to try that.  Thanks!

For the first 2 weeks after my surgery I had my comfy chair parked in front of the kids Tv and watched cooking programs, with earphones! I wasnt very social and couldnt care less.I was just sipping water and broth and would walk down the stairs every half hour to get exercise!

As far as protein's concerned it made me feel very sick, headache sleepy, nausea for the first 14 days,I just couldnt drink it.I was lactose intolerant as well.

Sip,sip, sip all the time.Only way to get the water in.

Soft foods.Personally eggs didnt wor****il week 8.I kept on eating mushy foods for an additional 7 days as food made me feel as if my stomach spasm'd.

You will have to find what works for you.Every one is different really.

Good luck and enjoy cooking programs!

I watched the Food Network all the time before surgery and I still do after.. I was sleeved the day after you.. It doesn't really bother me since I know I can't eat that kind of food yet.. but I just always did like the shows.. As far as the protein drinks. I ordered the sampler Pack from Syntrax and got 14 samples of protein powders.. They have an Ice Tea with Lemon and also a Roadside Lemonade that you might like..23 grams of protein per scoop mix with water.. It tastes just like Ice Tea with lemon in it to me.. My Vitamin Shoppe carries the big tubs of them in there store, so when I found what flavors I had really liked from the sample packets then I went and bought a couple of big tubs.. just got done with my Ice Tea one a bit ago... The sample packets are on sale you get 14 of them for $14.99 plus a dollar shipping.. I got it within 5 days.. They sent me both sweet and the juice kinds.. (thinner)  there were some I loved and then some I didn't... but for $15.99 it was well worth it.. go to there website and check it out.. www.syntrax.com and see what you think.. Also on the water part.. I take my big mug and fill it with ice and water.. then I take a paper cup 8oz size and pour my icy cold water into that and sip it that way.. It doesn't seem to overwhelming to do it that way.. I am with you before surgery I could drink a gallon of water a day.. but now.. no way.. it is frustrating, but I am doing the best I can.. Also the first few days I used a 3oz paper cup, now I am up to a 8oz one.. then when I am ok with that I will go back to my bigger cups.. Baby steps.. that is what I am doing right now.. Good Luck !!!
