I've made my decision.

I went to a local doctor here in New Jersey today. He is Dr. Chau out of NJ Bariatrics. I am a self payer and I was agonizing over whether I should have my sleeve done here in the states or go to Mexico. Dr. Ortiz in Mexico charges about $5000.00.  Dr. Chau's fee is $14,800.00.  After speaking with him for about an hour I decided to spend the extra money a get my surgery here in New Jersey.  I'm lucky to have the funds now and figured why take the extra risks going out of the country. Especially since I will have a support group here where I can actually go and talk with people.  I'd like to know your thoughts.  Do any of you know of Dr. Chau?  Am I making the right decision in paying nearly 3 times as much?  By the way, I found out today that I've shrunk an inch in my old age (59). I'm now 5'7 and my BMI is 52.

It sounds like you are making the right decision for you. Many people go to MX because there is just no was they can afford it here. Yes its more to pay but if you can swing it and you really feel secure with your surgeon then it soulds like you know what to do.

its much better to have a support group most people that fail don't go to support groups

also it is hard to find surgeons in the us that will treat you if you have a problem with Mexican surgery

I heard there was 1 doctor in new jersey that was $11,000, also some lower cost ones in texas

He's way north of me so no, never heard of him.  Is that including hospital fees?  The bill for the hospital (not the doc) was $75k but I had insurance coverage... although I'm still on the hook for almost 6k.

The price is all inclusive.  $5500.00 for the doctor, $1800.00 for the anesthesiologist and $7500.00 for one night stay in the hospital.  How long were you in the hospital and why?  This doc said they will have me home in one day.

Hello - did you have your surgery?  I am scheduled with Dr Chau for March 6th and would love to hear how your experience was with him if you went through with it.

Thanks!

My surgery is scheduled for March 20th. I think I'll be asking you that question. LOL. But seriously, message me if you want to talk. I spoke to one of Dr. Chau's patients for a recommendation.
