Hair loss when you have the Vertical sleeve ??

I had my orientation today with the nurse and surgeon and they said that hair loss is a big factor when you have this procedure done. I was so pumped up about being sleeved but after hearing that it scared me. My hair is already extremely thin and I can't imagine losing more hair I'm scared now and I don't know what to do :(

It can be a common side effect of any surgery and anesthesia - not just the sleeve. Look up telogen effluvium for more info.

You lose some between 3-9 months and it grows back. It happens with almost any surgical procedure. Would you rather be fat and have great hair or skinny and have great hair a year after surgery.

It's just a small sacrifice to gain a better health.

You are so right. Thanks for the quick response it just scared me when they talked about it and since I already have extremely thin hair and it falls out a lot it kind of made me think twice.

Most people say that no one else notices but you do because you are the one cleaning the drain in the shower. It's only a bump in the road, not a major life changing type of thing. Getting skinny is worth it in my humble opinion.

You are right. It's just I'm a little self conscious about my hair already so it just makes me think twice but I am super excited and ready!

I have very thin hair too. Mine started falling out at about 3&1/2 months. Im 6 months tomorrow and it has slowed considerably in the last couple of weeks. I've lost about 30% of my volume I guess.

Mine is long, so I just wa**** less (once to twice a week) and wear it up more often. No-one else but me and my close family has noticed though.

And for 140lbs, its totally worth it!

Wow 140 pounds that is awesome and in just six months that gives me hope I'm so excited I'm not going to let this hair loss get in the way of me achieving my goal.

I have very thin and very fine hair too and that was my concern too. I did a few things before and after my sleeve and whether it was that or luck but I lost very little. I started to take my biotin a month before my sleeve along with using shampoo and conditioners with biotin I used Nioxin (sp?). I started "washing" my hair daily using only the conditioner, no shampoo. I only use shampoo once a week. Like I said I lost little to none after my sleeve. I am still doing the conditioner washings because I love the results so.

Well that's awesome! I hope I'm as lucky as you. I actually bought a new shampoo and conditioner that my hair dresser suggested and I started it last night. I'm also going to start taking biotin. It's probably best to start it now before my surgery date gets closer. I went to my orientation today thinking I still have a long ways to go but everything is happening so fast that I think I will be sleeved within these next couple of months!
