Believe it or not, I am going to miss not using a straw more than anything with my sleeve.  For some reason I'm quite dependent on straws.  Just wondering if anyone started using them again without issue.

I'm not exactly a vet. I'm 5 months out and have lost 102#. I started using a straw a couple months out with no problems.

GREAT Question!!! I want to use a straw SO bad. I'll be 5 weeks post-op tomorrow, I was told to not use a straw ever again. Every surgeon is different as we all know. I've read a few posts where people were able to use a straw right after their surgery. It's very frustrating because I know if I used a straw I could get twice as many liquids in.

Why do some surgeons say absolutely not to straws when other surgeons allow it? I'd love a clear answer to this.

I kept forgetting to not to use a straw and I have had no problems at all.   So I'm using them as much as I ever did.

prarie-dog-girl... 102# weight loss totally equals a vet!

My surgeron said no straw because you will take in air and stretch the pouch.

I don't know of any surgeon that allows it. Some people do it anyway. Life is about choices. After going through all this do you really want to cheat if it can hurt you?

What's next? Lasagne?

I've used a straw here and there but I usually end up taking it out and I don't miss it - I think I used them mostly with diet soda, which can't have that anymore! My understanding is it was really about minimizing gas discomfort. I don't believe air from a straw is going to stretch a sleeve, that just doesn't make sense to me. Carbonation, yes. A straw, no.

Currently 180 - 76 lbs lost! Surgery 11/7/12, 36 years old, 5'8". I live in Hong Kong and it's a bit different here!

I've been using one since about two weeks out. My surgeon is fine with it. There are many people on here who use one and other surgeons are ok with it. It helps me greatly in reaching my drinking goals each day. There is no evidence that it expands your sleeve.

not a vet....but I guess I'm guilty if you consider a water bottle with a permanent straw?  I use it in the morning til noon for 32 oz of part coffee (decaf) part protein beverage, part ice.  I do, however, let it sit in my mouth for a while and slowly let swallow bit by bit.  (and PLEASE, ahem,  no nasty comments from the pervs on that!!) .  otherwise, I do not use a regular straw.....I don't think it bothers me, but I'm seeing the surgeon in a few days, I'll ask him about it.
