So MAD!!!!!!!! Seriously!!!

Okay I NEED to vent. Back in October we increased our life insurance through my husbands work.  Which is a pain but in the event of mine or my husbands death we wanted the remaining spouse to have enough life insurance to pay off all debts.  Cars, house etc...so as not to disrupt our children's lifestyle or home. Well today I get a notice that says. "We reviewed your request for coverage at this time. Our decision was based on your current weight, admitted on your evidence of insurability form. We did not request medical records since your admitted health history (which was only height and weight) was sufficient to render our decision. I am soooo mad.  They decided this based on a number!!!! I am 5'9 and 319 pounds.  I am 2 weeks away from this surgery and I was hoping this would be in place for the surgery "just in case" and as peace of mind.  We have two kids to worry about.  Heres the thing.  I am 319 lbs but I have NO COMORBIDITIES!! Nothing! I have no health problems other than some anxiety.   I am on zero meds other than an anxiety pill I only take for panic attacks maybe once a month. How is that fair! or right! And now that I am having this surgery will they ever insure me after my weight comes down? Damned if I do Damned if I dont. Ugh!

Even with no comorbidities, the weight alone puts you in a high risk category for heart attack and stroke. Sorry this happened, but its also not surprising.

Am I reading this right... they consider you too healthy to give you insurance? I would think they would want your money. If it is the other way around then they will probably want to give you all the insurance you can afford in 6 months when your weight is considerably down.

Here's hoping for great things!

I work for an insurance company so I can tell you that they put the height and weight boxes at the top for a reason. It weeds out quite a few applicants. The best time to apply is right when it is offered and you don't have to go through medical underwriting. Insurance companies use the same BMI scales as Dr.'s and if you don't fit in that mold you are considered too much of a risk. I only have basic life insurance (which my employer provides) because I would have never passed medical underwriting. You can be re-evaluated when you are at a lower weight though, but they will request medical records and depending on the insurance company I am not sure if the pre-existing conditions provision would apply, depends on the contract.

Again, best time to sign up is when it is first offered. Most employees/spouses can get a certain amount without medical underwriting within a certain number of days of being a new hire.

Sorry hun!

Severe obesity is one of the underwriting conditions that knock you out of additional insurance, when underwriting is required.

My husband, who is not overweight, takes high blood pressure meds, and he was denied additional coverage when I applied for additional insurance on him.

Sorry, but as the other poster indicated, this is very common.   Here's a little info that may be helpful for future applications:

Yes,it is wrong and don't really plan on being able to get additional life insurance, unless you don't have to report your WLS,after wards, because you will be denied for that reason, too. damned if we do and damned if we don't? Yes.

You have to understand that all insurance companies are out to MAKE money. It is a for profit business. Many companies have shareholders who are expecting big dividends every quarter.

Don't EVEN make the mistake of thinking they care about your children's future or your bills for that matter. They don't. The more they have to pay out for deaths, the less goes in their pockets. The more reasons they can find to NOT insure people who are at higher risk for death, the better they like it. Morbidly obese ppl are higher risk cause even with no comorbidities, you are more likely to drop dead from the weight than a normal size person. After WLS,they don't know whether complications will cause you to drop dead right away either. either way they are trying to keep from having to pay out ANYTHING on your probable/possible death.

Try Zander Insurance - it is a company recommended by Dave Ramsey (finance guy).  I was able to get a $1 million policy when I was 5'4", and 260 pounds.  I had to pay about $150 a month for it, but I was able to qualify.  Also keep in mind that you might be denied after surgery for quite some time due to the fact that you had surgery - I had heard that the time frame was 5 years, but I was never able to verify this.

Good luck!
