2 Weeks Post-op... Rocky start!
First let me say how grateful I am to be part of this awesome forum. Your encouragement and advise has been invaluable.
I was sleeved on July 9th, and let me begin my saying not all surgeons are the same when it comes to their practices regarding VSG. My surgery went well, however, my surgeon does not use a drain. Therefore, blood was draining out of my umbilical incision. Of course my family and I freaked out, but the surgeon and nurses said it was normal.
If that wasn’t bad enough, apparently I am extremely sensitive to anesthesia. In the operating room they had a hard time reversing me. I remember the Anesthesiologist asking me to raise my arm and I was trying very hard, but it was not going up. Scary! Due to the anesthesia post-op, I had additional: nausea, unable to urinate, fatigue, and drop in body temperature.
As customary, the nurses tried to walk me every 4 hours, but due to my bleeding, the dilaudid for pain, the extra nausea medicine to combat the anesthesia and dilaudid, I could not physically get out of bed. By the grace of god I was finally able to urinate that night, lucky for me because I was one hour away from having a catheter put in me. Yikes!
The next morning I felt better, the bleeding had stopped and my surgeon discharged me home. Once home I ran a low grade fever 99.8 that made me sleep for approximately 20 hours a day for three days My nausea was terrible, I had sublingual Zofran to take at home, and I was taking it religiously. My family was wonderful and made sure they woke me up and made me drink on a regular schedule. On the 3rd post-op day, I got the worst headache that is if I ever had had blinding migraine headaches, this would be one of those. We called my Surgeon who prescribed Atarax. I felt so much better on day 4. Later I found out that one of the side effects of Zofran are horrible headaches. “Go figure?”
Since my rocky start, I have be fortunate to stick to my plan: protein 70g, cal 400-600, carbs
Hey my Atlanta VSG sister. I am so glad to hear you are doing better. It only gets better from now on.
