Catheters in hospital?

Hello VSG'ers,

Did any of you have to get a catheter put in while you stayed in the hospital? My sister works for the government in hospital-related infection control, and in her obsessive/paranoid research, she found out that the hospital where I'm having surgery has a higher-than-average rate of catheter UTI's. (They get awesome ratings on everything else, so this is small potatoes!)

I'm sure I can ask my surgeon when I have my pre-op appointment, but I was just wondering what others dealt with during their hospital stays. TIA! :)

I didn't. I specifically asked about it pre op and they said that there's no need because you'll be getting out of bed pretty quickly. You will be on IV fluids so be prepared to need to get up to pee. You'll be weak, but they can put a "potty chair" next to your bed if you don't think you can make it into the bathroom. That's what they did for me the first half of the day immediately after surgery. (Plus I had blurred vision from the morphine that made me dizzy, so I was VERY thankful for the short distance!)

best of luck!!

No catheter or drain tubes here, my surgeon doesn't use either of those for laparoscopic VSGs.  I was only under for about 30 minutes and they had me up and walking very soon after surgery.   Hope that's the same for you!

No catheter for me.  No JP drains either.  If they use them, just tell them you prefer not to have one.  I don't think it will be an issue.

My surgeon said they stopped  catheterizing because of the risk of infection and that it wasn't necessary.

I had a catheter, a drain, AND an NG tube.  The catheter was the least of my problems.  Didn't even feel it and came out after first night in hospital.  No complications either but if you're susceptible to UTI's maybe just make that clear to the surgeon.

I had a catheter and it didn't bother me.I was relieved to get it out because I wanted to get up and walk around. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was.

My surgery was almost 3hrs and I did have one. They left it in till the following morning due to the amount of abd pain was in. I didn't even notice it was there.
