From Band to Sleeve in same surgery?

I hope this isn't a question that sounds silly but, has anyone had the revision from band removal to sleeve in one surgical session (one surgery)?  Is this even possible?  My appt. with the surgeon is in April and I want to know about this.

I did not have a revision, but I have read about TONS of people who have revised from band to sleeve during the same procedure. HOWEVER, be aware that when the surgeon gets in there, if you have a lot of scar tissue around your band, they might decide it's safer to give you a chance to heal after band removal before they do the VSG. Best of luck!

Thanks Chrissy, and I do hope to have it all done at once.  But...as long as it gets done without complications, i will be happy.

By the way...you have done a terrific job!

Aww, thanks! It's definitely getting harder the closer I get to goal, but I feel amazing!

Yes I did.  On January 6th I had my lapband (from 2007) removed and was sleeved and the same time!  It is possible.  My doctor told me before surgery it would depend on the condition of my stomach and if there was a lot of scar tissue.  Happy to say all was good!

That gives me alot of hope Michelle!  Thank you so much and to know you were also banded in 2007 is even better.

On October 23, 2013 I had a band to sleeve revision in one surgery.  I did end up staying in the hospital a few days longer than most as they said I had a little more swelling than one who gets just the sleeve alone and I was not able to keep much down the first couple of days.  All in all though there were no complications and I am doing wonderful with it, I progressed on the food stages as normal, etc.  I do have to say this was the best decision I've made!

I'm one of those revisioners that did it in a two part surgery.  There's a lot of debate on this matter but I went with what my surgeon felt most comfortable with because, let's be honest, he/she is the one poking around in your innards while you are asleep and your life is literally in their hands.  I did not have a lot of complications from the band but when he got in there for band removal he discovered a large hiatal hernia and lots of scar tissue.  That helped him when he went back in two months later to do my sleeve.  Like others have said, if your stomach has a lot of scar tissue, etc you may wake up without your revision done in one shot.  I would talk to your surgeon, list all your symptoms/side effects from the band, and let them make an educated decision.  Best of luck! It's the best decision I ever made! (revision that is :)

band to sleeve revision and loving life!

You do you, and I'll do me

And I appreciate hearing from you also Danixbanani!  I want to know what can happen so that I won't be upset if that does happen to me.  I hope it is all done in one surgery but if it cannot be, I would rather have a doc who will not leave my health to chance and play on the safe side.

56sunShine14,

I did want to mention something that I thought was funny.  Going into the surgery I did not know if I would wake up in recovery sleeved or not.  My son was with me and he told me the first thing out of my mouth when I was starting to wake back up was "Do I have it, did it work?"

:)
