Hi all,

I am still preop getting my clearances and all looks good so far. I am  getting the Laparascopic VSG and I am concerned about how much post op pain there will be and if there is some, how is it treated.

Please post your post-op pain stories.

I had a fantastic experience.  24 hours in the hospital and the normal "gas pain" from where they inflate the abdomen to complete the surgery.  Nothing unbearable, but I did shift positions more than normal.  Walking helps!  At home it took a couple days for most of the gas pain to dissapate.  Pain from my actual stomach area was very minimal.  Pain from my hiatel hernia repair was worse than the stomach surgery, but nothing bad at all.  I stopped pain meds in the hospital, and took maybe 2-3 doses of Loritab total at home.  4 days post op I went to a holiday gathering without incident. 2 weeks post op back working without incident.  It truly was a very easy process.

I had minimal pain. Mostly soreness around the incision that they pulled the stomach through. I took liquid pain meds for a week or so. Good luck with your journey!

I had the misfortune of waking up when I was being transferred from the OR table to the stretcher.  They shot something in my IV and I slept for four hours.  They are very generous with pain meds.  Immediately after surgery I had some spasms in my stomach but no real lingering pain.  I was up the afternoon of the surgery walking.  Aside from pain when getting in or out of the bed, I was pretty comfortable.  I had a morphine pump I could use every ten minutes but I only used it at night to help me sleep.  I walked out of the hospital the next morning.

The discomfort of swallowing fluids and having a dry mouth was much worse than the pain from the surgery, in my experience.

I got tylenol with codeine (liquid) for pain once I was off the IV.  I had to take it twice a day for the first few days, then once a day the next day, and then a half dose the following day.  So.. 3-4 days total after getting home?  My pain was very minor and manageable.

Immediately post-op, in recovery, I was in the 7-8 range, but it never got that high afterward.  I'm a fan of staying ahead of pain instead of waiting for it to get so high!

My pain was very bearable. Most of it was from the incision site, it hurt to get out of bed. You will learn to get up from lying down in a way that won't strain your abdominal muscles too much. I had gas but it was more annoying than painful-walking really does help a lot. Good luck!

Minimal pain. But some discomfort. Less than 24 hrs at the surgical center then 24 hrs in a recovery hotel with a 24 hr nurse then home. Never took any pain meds. When I first woke up they gave me a morphine shot and then one more that evening and that was it. I heal very well and fast. Didn't even get scabs over my incisions. They just closed up and that was that.

It was painful when I woke up, but by the second day, I quit hitting the button on my pain pump.  I never took any pain meds once I was home.  The only real irritation was the drain, and that was irritating, not painful.  I have been up and walking and doing house chores and stuff, and haven't felt any pulls or twinges or anything.  I told my surgeon I didn't believe he removed anything, cause it doesn't hurt :-)

I had minimal pain. Like everyone else says, walking around after surgery helps. Ask the nurses to bring you a walker. That first walk will be SO much easier with a walker at hand. I was out of the hospital after 2 days, and managed my pain quite easily using the prescribed pain pills.

I had laparoscopic VSG, and I was surprised how little pain I had.  I didn't need anything stronger than Tylenol.  I had little gas pain and no nausea, but I asked for lots of anti-nausea meds and I think they helped.  I did feel like I had the flu for about 3 days.  I had headaches, and just wanted to sleep all the time.  By day 5, I was up and about and feeling more-or-less normal.  I did get tired easily for the first few months, but I'm In my 60s and I think that may have contributed to the tiredness.

I hope you have an equally uneventful surgery.

best wishes,

Carol
