Is this enough?

My husband is 4 days out from surgery. Yesterday with me pushing him and constantly reminding him, he got down one premiere protein shake blended with 6 ice cubes, 1.5 bottles of water and maybe 4oz of Isopure. I keep telling him this isn't enough, but he says he's too bloated to drink and he feels better when he doesn't. He doesn't read message boards or anything so he doesn't understand the high risk of dehydration. Is this enough for the first few days or should he be drinking way more?

I believe 40 ounces is the absolute minimum to avoid dehydration.

(Obviously we should get much more!)

hi sdkitty,

It is very important to drink as much as possible, but it generally takes at least a few days to work up to 64 oz a day which is most surgeon's recommended minimum. The sleeve can be very swollen at first so there is not much room even for clear liquids. Sip constantly as if it is a 24 hour a day job. Keep a water bottle within reach at all times, even have one on the bedside table.

Drinking should get easier very soon. If it doesn't your husband should check with his doctor. He is lucky to have your support and encouragement.

all the best, Katy

consult weight 241 (had not been accurately weighed for over 10 years, my medical records just said "wheelchair") high weight was probably closer to 260.

Dehydration won't happen in a day, or two, or three. But he should be increasing this each day.

Of course it feels better not drinking. He had major surgery. But he should listen to his doctor and do it anyway. He'll feel much, much worse if he does get dehydrated.

Water is like medicine. Tell him to just take his medicine.
