Can someone clarify the protein goals for both men and women? My husband and I just noticed the instructions from our doctor has conflicting information.

Thanks.

There was nothing gender based in any of my paperwork.  Protein goals for all of my surgeon's patients are 60-80 grams.

(For what it's worth, the ASMBS does have a recommendation of 1.1grams per kilogram of ideal body weight, I think.)

It varies by height.  I am 6'2'' and was given a target of 80.  A 5' chic wouldn't need that much.  There are some sites online that you can plug your info in and it will geneate a number, but it would be best to get that from your doc/nut.

There are several approaches to determining basic protein goals, and they all wind up in the same ballpark. The one that makes the most sense to me is based upon the maintenance of our lean body mass which is where the divergence between men and women often shows up - men tend to be bigger and more muscular than women, so need more protein to maintain their lean mass (in addition to overall average size, "normal" women carry more fat than men - mid 20's body fat % is "normal" for women, while for men it's mid-teens.) This correlates well with the typical rules of thumb that we hear that women should get 60-80 g protein while men are often advised 80-100 g, and these are good average ranges to work with in the absence of more specific requirements.

If you are very active, you may need to increase your protein intake by 10-20g as well.  My dr's target is 80g min, working up to 100g, but on days I work out "hard" his RD advises me to aim for 110g.  I'm 5'3" and female.
