I wouldn't just to be safe. I wasn't supposed to have anything after midnight except a tiny sip to take medication.

NO.  Some surgeons will not operate if you have had more than one ounce in the 8-12 hours before surgery.  What they may let you have is enough to wet your lips or just a couple of small ice chips.  Drinking anything just before surgery can cause problems with the anesthesia and aspiration - look up n Wikipedia and you will understand.

NOPE! They tell you this because it reduces the risk for aspiration during surgery. This is the reflux of acid/liquids  into the lungs while lying supine on the surgery table. DO NOT TAKE A CHANCE. If you aspirate during surgery this can lead to them keeping you intubate on the ventilator (breathing machine) and being admitted for a longer hospital stay.

My instruction was no solid food after midnight and drinking water, tea or clear broth ok up to three hours before surgery. But call your surgeon and follow the instructions given by the surgeon. Good luck Monday!
