I don't support going against your doctor's advice, but I will tell you that in my program we are to take a minimum of 2000 iu of D3 per day. I take a gel cap of 2000 iu in the morning and then my calcium citrate also has vitamin D3. I'm getting well over 2500 iu per day and my levels have been fine for over 3 years.

So calcium citrate and D3 are separate supplements? After surgery I need to take the calcium citrate and now I'll have to.add the D3 too?

Get a list of all the supplements you'll have to take. I take calcium, D3, Omega 3-6-9, Biotin, magnesium, a multi vitamin, iron, vitamin C, and B12.

Most calcium supplements have D3 added to them because the D3 helps with calcium absorption. However, most medical professionals now believe we need a lot more D3 than previously thought. So, yes, a separate D3 supplement is required in my program.

I take a separate D3 too, even though my calcium citrate has some D3 in it.  I am fair-skinned and live in Nebraska where I don't see the light of day for months at a time.  I'm also a faithful sunscreen user....I need the extra D.

Vitamin D deficiencies are often related to where you live.  I have a friend who is a nutritionist and she said the most recent research supports 5,000 IU supplements where I live in Wyoming.  My doc recommends 1,000 in addition to what is in my calcium supplement and my multi-vitamin but I take 5000.

My pre-op labs showed my Vit D low and I was already taking 2,000 IU because of previous labs showing my Vit D level low. So she told me to up it to 3,000. I wear a total sunblock, so I don't get any Vit D from the sun.

My D3 was shockingly low pre-op, so I started taking 10,000IU a day.  When I got my lab results from a year post-op, my D3 was at the high side of the healthy range, so now I'm only taking 5,000IU a day.

Here's my vitamin list that shows what I take now and what I started taking immediately post-op.  https://www.myvsg.net/2-uncategorised/194-vitamin-schedule-w ith-links
