Surgery Scheduled - A few Post-Op Diet Questions!

Hello all!

I finally have a surgery date! I am set to get sleeved on June 24th! Less than a month away! I just had a few questions regarding my post-op diet. My surgeon has me on pureed/mushed food on the day I get home from the hospital (but NO veggies or fruit until month 2). What is your favorite method to puree/mush things like ground meats or fish? I am only allowed to use broth or low-fat mayo to make things moist. Would a hand blender be helpful?

Also, I input my typical Month 1 meal into a calorie tracker, and while I'm not concerned about the calories, I do see that a sample day's worth of food for me has around  80-120 protein. My nutritionist told me to make sure I get at least 60g of protein a day. That number seems really...simple? Does it get harder to get that amount of protein in, in execution? Right now, I'm looking at it like, "60 grams?? Too easy!!" LOL.

Any advice is appreciated!

Sounds easy now because you can easily eat more than an ounce at a time.  That won't be the case immediately pre-op.  You'll find that for the first few weeks you'd better have some protein shakes handy because it will be the only way you'll get in 60 grams of protein.  And getting those down can be quite the chore too :-)

I never had to do a "mushy" stage so I don't have an opinion on the hand blender idea.

As Tracy said, without protein supplements, there's no way you'll hit 60g of protein for the first couple of months.  I'm two months out and still have to have at least one shake a day to get above 70g.  You just can't eat enough real food to get that much protein in a day.

My program had a "puree" phase from week 4-6. I had a lot of soups I whizzed up in the blender with some added chicken for more protein.  You might try that?

I am on mushy  right now and If I didn't have a premier protein shake a day I would never get my protein goal.  My favorite is refried beans with melted cheese on it.  I do a lot of yogurt and cottage cheese. I am 10 days out and it don't take very much to fill me up.

SO MUCH SO! I keep referring to my life as post-op and pre-op, because I have so much riding on this. My husband jokes it sounds like I'm talking about getting a sex change! LOL. I look at clothes and think "Oh! I can't wait to wear this post op, etc." Mostly I'm just so happy to not have knee pain anymore. My worst obesity symptom is that my genetically weak, arthritic knees (and I'm only 32), hurt so so much with all my excess weight on top of them. I can't wait to be able to climb stairs without ANY pain!!

How about yourself? Hopefully looking forward to it also??

Lol!!! That really made me laugh because I've been doing the same thing! I've even bought some clothes that are way smaller than me now and I've said to my husband "I can't wait to wear this once I lose weight!" So I totally get it! And yes!!! Omg I have never been this excited for anything since my wedding! I'm sure I'll feel different in recovery but I can't wait to get this started. I had my pre surgical tests done this morning so it's getting so real.

That's great! I have clothes in my closet in every size from 14-24, because I gained my weight pretty rapidly (a terrible gain of like 120 lbs in the span of 5 years). So it'll be nice to not have to completely buy a new wardrobe, but I know that as my body looks slimmer, I won't be able to resist going shopping every once in a while for a new outfit. ;)
